I visited a Southern Baptist church and was wearing a maroon shirt that my Mother gave me for Christmas. I sat in the back row when an usher told me I had to leave because I was drawing attention to myself by wearing a red shirt. I told him that it was maroon and I was sitting in the back row, so how could I be trying to draw attention to myself. That was the craziest thing I'd ever heard in a church, so I definitely won't be going back there.

Here's my question: Is that a rule with Southern Baptists, or did I just happen to come across one with a power complex? I emailed the Pastor about it, but never got a reply.

i am sorry that you had to experience that

I do not know whether the church approves/teaches this, or if it's just the deacon being a... Whatever you want to say he is. Bless him.

Anyhow, there is nothing biblical that would point to you needing to leave the service because of the color of your shirt.

Jesus would not want you to go home because of the color of your shirt...

Your shirt would be a distraction, for example, if it had expletive or suggestive text, or inappropriate/suggestive images.

Try calling the pastor. He may truly be concerned that this happened... Just think if you never did call, and the problem never got corrected... What kind of message does that send to someone who may have come to heard The Word of God and got turned away for their shirt color?

I couldn't think of any Biblical reasons for that either. The shirt doesn't have any text or pictures, just a plain maroon short sleeved shirt. Thanks for your input. God bless you!

I attended Southern Baptist churches for years and years. No one would have asked you to leave.

Now if there was nudity, porn like stuff, they may have asked you to put on a jacket over it.

I attended SBC churches all my life in several states and Pastored 3. What you said would be like saying that you were not allowed to join the Republican party because you live in Kansas. It makes no sense at all and has never been heard of before or since. Are you absolutely sure you were sober?

I have never heard of that before. If you want to follow up, I would do as Dkh587 suggested and call the pastor.

If that were truly a problem, then a lot of people would get in trouble around here for wearing their local football team's colors o Sunday. I can think of a team in just about every southeastern state that has some version of Red in their team colors. Florida State, Georgia, South Carolina, NC State, Alabama, Mississippi State, etc...

Now ORANGE on the other hand...

I suspect the reason you never got a reply back is because you made the story up.

Our church is about evenly divided between Auburn fans and Bama fans.

Interestingly, and this isn't a commentary about the Bama fans, but I've noticed that most of the Auburn fans are actually alumni, or parents or children of alumni, while most of the Bama fans are not.

We kid each other, but it's all good natured.

Ever since the tornadoes in 2011, we're all brothers and sisters, friends, and neighbors first, football fans second.

Sober? How could you even ask that? I do not drink alcohol or do drugs. And yes, my story is true. There's no need for you to be rude.

the wheat and the tares grow side by side
please do not judge all Southern Baptists based on a few bad apples :)

I didn't judge. All I did was ask if that was a rule. I got my answer and thanked the first person who commented/answered my Q. I then got some rude comments for no reason. You're comment wasn't rude, so thank you for that. I have my answer, so this thread is done as far as I'm concerned. Bye.

Is that a rule with Southern Baptists

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!! I wouldn't go back to that "Ship of fools" either, but I wouldn't "Write off" the entire Southern Baptist organization because of one "Lunatic Fringe Religious Club" with an SBC sign out front.

I think what some were reacting to is that story is so ridiculous it sounds made up. Seriously, I've never been in a SBC where color of shirt was a serious issue, and I've been in a number of them because of moving around the country. Immodest dress, such as neckline to the navel or pants on the ground, yeah, they'd say something about that. But color?

In our church, the pastor is a GA Tech fan, and about half the congregation are Georgia fans. So he's always calling out the "red-shirt" folks, especially on the day of the GA/GA Tech game. But it's all in fun.
