  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hey all. I can understand your concern about links directing to another place than it appears and risk having your computer wiped out or your personal data stolen, so I thought I'd let you in on a little mousing secret. If you hover your mouse over a link, (no clicking) whether it is in a forum or email etc., a little yellow box will pop up and show you the url it is going to, so that you can see if it is some wacky address or an address other than the one posted. Hope that helps some for the future with a little technique for damage control prevention.
Thank you for the tip but I'm worried about virus, and spyware

But I need to ask to make sure I didn't recently break the rules, as I posted a link to a utube video.
I knew we couldn't post to another forum. Can someone tell me what the specific infraction would have been in HB's case? It was a testimony, right? Is that really against the rules here?

I wouldn't really worry about it people don't usually get bent out of shape over this sort of thing unless new and linking to an unknown site.

I got nailed twice and decided to not risk it anymore~the last time was really bad, and what was deceiving about it was that the url was a decent sounding thing, it's just that when it finally loaded it changed and BAM I got a faceful of gay porn.

So I said never again. And I make no apologies for it.

Strange thing was that both times were on a Sunday morning. Thankfully I was always able to hunt down a mod somewhere (there's always a Catholic mod available it seems) and get it removed.

I can't believe the reception you gave this person! If I were him I would've left too. He posted a link in one post to something he finds inspirational and every reply to his post just seems to be piling on him. First he's accused of spamming, which is (currently at least) defined in the rules as "promoting personal commercial ventures, repeatedly duplicating the verbiage of one’s previous posts, or separating a single sentence into several posts", none of which was done. Then someone says it might be porn. Then when he didn't reply within a few hours, his post is declared a "hit and run". Not everyone spends every waking hour posting on internet forums!

Next someone decides to use this thread, started by a new guy who no one's had anything nice to say about yet, to complain about people posting videos in general. Why couldn't this complaint have gone in one of the many "watch this video" threads started by established users? And then someone points out that he hasn't given out any personal information, which supposedly made him more suspicious. So what? A lot of people don't! And it would only take a few seconds for a spammer to make something up.

I understand that people have had problems with links from new people before but this person never did anything to any of you. Couldn't you have given him the benefit of the doubt? Did anyone even bother saying so much as "welcome"? If you had concerns about the link, you didn't have to follow it. If you thought he needed to be told about those concerns, couldn't you have addressed them in a PM instead of a deluge of replies to his post that to a new user could easily interpret as accusations?

It cannot be helped. People have been burned. If you haven't, then, God bless you, but that doesn't mean that everyone is going to have had the same experience. We live in the world in which we have to be very careful. I think the proper response from the newbie would have been to reassure us that no harm was intended, describe the video, etc.

There was no need for him/her to storm off in a huff.

Yes, I realize what the concern is. And I shared with you some information to lessen your fears.

And by being able to see the web url, you are able to see if it is a whacky address. And of you are still leary of it, you can then copy and paste it (if you also wish to show good will to the new person) into google and see what pops up before you just cast it aside.

I pm'd HBCountry. She is a sweet lady and she gave me the link (I also found the video on Utube).

And I have to tell you, you all missed out on both counts! I got to meet a really nice lady AND I got blessed via the link she shared! Thank you HBCountry!

It was a video message that magnified the Lord and was very inspiring and uplifting. The poor lady was just trying to share something that she was excited about as a nice gesture and trying to make some new friends.

If you all would have googled the address you would have see many other links to the video and one even at utube and you could have enjoyed it risk free, made someone feel welcome and made a new friend. You all missed out big time and should extend a word of apology to her if you haven't already, for misjudging her and her intentions.

I think, emphasis, think that if the thread is started for the sole purpose of linking to another site, it is considered spamming. I am not so sure that is still true under the new rules. However, linking to an interesting site in the context of the discussion is okay. For example, if we are talking about Ancient Hebrew language, and I provided a link to the Ancient Hebrew alphabet, that would be okay to do.

The problem is that if you do not know the poster, if they are new, and they disappear for awhile, we tend to think that it may be problematic. I haven't been linked to porn, but I did have my identity stolen. Not that is related to this site, but it taught me to be very, very cautious.

He, is a she and from my perspective there most certainly was, and
I wouldn't be surprised if she left crying.

I am very quick to apologize most of the time, but in this case, I neither judged this lady nor have anything to apologize for. All that was said was that it was suspect. If she is so easily offended by that, that is not my fault.

It is up to you to choose to take such a risk. However, we also have the choice to not take such a risk. Regardless, you cannot argue that there was not a risk and if you tried, all I can say is that would be an extremely naive position.

Porn has been posted in the guise of a Christian link. Viruses are rampant. Spyware caused me to lose $700 out of my checking account. So, to act as if we are all being extremely unfair and meanspirited, in my opinion, is wrong of both you and her.

All of this was explained many times.

From my viewpoint, it appears that you all ganged up on her, and treated her like a criminal. If that is not a reason to apologize after learning by 1st hand account of experience with her and her link that you all were wrong, then I do not know what is.

What else can I say?

This is the whole reason why threads where the only purpose is a link to another site is against the rules. We did nothing wrong.

Would you have preferred that we simply reported her?

Is that against the rules? I didn't know that.

I would have phrased it differently. Maybe said "thanks for the link, but since we've had problems with spammers, I play it safe and don't click on links from people I don't know." I think there's a line between being cautious and being accusatory, and the difference is breaking fellowship with a potential new friend.

Well, we are being called accusatory, but here is my first reply to the person:

Well, I appreciate that, but you may want to delete the post and tell people in PM as you meet them. This is considered spamming, I think. I know of at least one person who has been banned for doing something similar.

And here is Mr. Jim's first reply...again not accusatory, perfectly reasonable.

And I never open a link by new people under 100 posts~been burned a couple of times on porno spam

No offense hbcountry, just get a little cynical...

Then the NEXT DAY, when there had been no reply from the OP, I asked if anyone else thought it was a hit and run post and should we report it...The OP then replies:

Wow!

You people are unbelievable.

Sure dear, you go ahead and report.

Just wanted to share something beautiful with fellow Christians.

Hit and run? Maybe hit and leave. If you posters are an example of what this forum is about - I want no part of it. Perhaps I try another section.

Perhaps there will be more Christian-like behavior on them.

Which I then tried to make nice...

Now, hold on. You are too new to understand our reactions.

First, your post is technically against the rules. Second, you did not stick around for us to know if you were a troll or not. Third, we have been burned before with people claiming to send us to a Christian site, but instead it was something that was very sinful or mean.

Yes, and that was fine, but I would not have suggested reporting. And when I realized that the person was offended, I would have tried to extend friendship rather than get defensive. If something you say is taken the wrong way (even if you don't believe it's your fault), there's no reason not to extend the first olive branch. This is especially true when a newcomer is unsure of her welcome.
