Something I learned...

OK well I thought I would share some information that I learned today with you wonderful people! I am reading this book "Isaac Asimov's Guide to Earth and Space" I wanted to see what you all thought of this. I am just going to quote the book, so i dont confuse anyone, because this Isaac guy explains it really well.

The last link mentions a few times that there was frequent flooding in sumer.... So this is just about all i could find, im sorry i couldnt provide you with more.

I didnt know what forum to put this in, so i hope putting it here is ok, and that it will get the attention it needs... I just saw it, and wanted to know what you all thought of it. I dont know how many of you already knew about this, so if you did, please bear with me, im slow.

That's fine with me if what you say is true. Even Jesus while he walked on this earth had a small following. But what he was, and had to say, was still true. Huge followings are not a good judgement for what is right or wrong. Look at Sodom and Gamorra(guess that's how it's spelled). The whole town was into doing certain things. And Lott's family was the only one's worthy to be saved. The majority or huge following lost out. And the few survived. But what happened to Lott's wife is just a reminder that when your even part of the choosen few, you can go astray and end up just like the rest who choose not to believe.

The point is that the majority of Christians (yes, Bible-believing Christians) worldwide do not believe in either a young earth or a global flood. No, this is not a guarantee of their correctness by a long shot. But to go to the other side and say that it is likely wrong because it is the majority opinion is faulty as well. Christianity is the still the largest religion in the world, but that does not mean we have it all wrong.

But is it literalists who hate theistic evolutionists or vice versa? Either way, it doesn't reflect well on Christians.

Most people would say nice things about Mother Theresa...so who 'hated' her for being a Christian? Don't forget the context when Jesus is speaking, His Disciples are about to undertake the mission of spreading the Good News. And Jesus was right, in those days they were hated (expecially by the authorities of the day)...they were locked up, tried, tortured, executed, etc...everything that he said would happen did happen. Do you think Jesus meant that everyone will hate Christians for all time?

Being a Christian isn't about getting underneath everyone's skin over petty arguments about historical/metaphorical interpretations of scripture, is it? It isn't about cooking up interpretations of scientific data that justify the agenda of the literalists either.

Sure, there is a small group of Christians intent on pushing a literal agenda on both science and theology. But just because people don't like their agenda or their approach doesn't make their work Holy.

True, if the degree of persecution and hatred from the "World" corresponded to the degree of truth, then Jim Jones was a saint.

And I haven't seen Billy Graham being persecuted lately, he is highly respected by people of all faiths and non-faiths. I don't think this means he is outside the will of God.

That is what they are telling me. I am checking it out for myself. No global flood and creationism was already falsified. In a way I feel foolish if this is true. It may be, I have been in the other thread. Some smart guys around here. Girls here are also smart-sorry do not mean to leave any out.

OK, here is what happened. For many centuries, a young earth and a worldwide flood were believed. Then these were proved false by scientists (Christian scientists at that!) and this was recognized by most Christian groups for long time. Even when evolution came along, it was soon accepted by most Christians.

THEN, there was a resurgence of fundamentalism and Biblical "literalism" in America, especially the south. This exploded with the rise of pentecostal and evangelical churches during the middle of the century. By the 60's and 70's young earth creationism had experienced a revival as people started reading Scripture once again in the most literal and "plain" reading, basically going back to the beliefs that were held prior to the early to mid-1800's.

So, don't feel foolish at all. Many of us were raised in the midst of this resurgence of "plain readin'!" and it is difficult to realize that we were really just an isolated pocket within the larger Christian body. But which groups send out seminars, write books and control the Christian airwaves? Which group is better set up to spread its teachings? The fundamentalists. So, here we are . . .
