There are thousands of people who claim to be led by the Spirit. Look at how many thousands of divisions there are. Apparently, if they are truly being led by the Spirit, the Holy Spirit is not being a very effective leader. In fact, it would appear that He is being rather (HYPERBOLE) schizophrenic.

He can't be leading everyone, for He only leads in one Faith, one Doctrine. Not many thousands.

None are different from the other in most those claims or of preaching themselves as true and to join their division I agree

Good point. What Paul had spoke to them, he then wrote to them.

Speculating about what else Paul spoke also, is pure self-appointed popism masquerading as a bishop of such-and-such at its best.

We don't speculate. We ask those who knew Paul personally, such as Clement and Ignatius, both of whom were contemporaries of the Apostles. We ask those ordained by them, and who came in succession from them.

It isn't speculation. It is observation.

It is belief that God would preserve an unchanged Church in every generation.

It was this one

That looks like Sly Stallone

I don't watch movies much, but would have to say (in historic terms), Stallone probably looks like a bit like this ^_^ (as the icon predates him by over a thousand years)

As we are all created in the image of God, I suppose we could see endless 'looks like' variations in icons and still understand them as not inaccurate (that includes Sly Stallone ;))

Presbyterians, Baptists, and Pentecostals. Divided on Salvation itself. And all three are divided from Roman Catholics on that. All four are divided from Orthodox on that topic.

Salvation is the center purpose of Christ's coming to earth! If they are divided on that topic, then only ONE is teaching the truth

Same reason your church is divided with RCC.

Our division reflects in part a difference in ecclesial arrangement - specifically the position/role of the pope/bishop of Rome.

;) your Church is welcome to return to the RC and accept the status of pope as stands without discussion. Do it quickly enough, and you'll one-up us on healing that division !

I honestly don't really like that one. It exists in some places, but I think it is a little weird looking and just gives off a bad...vibe. I hate using that word in relation to an Icon, but it just isn't something I would have hanging in my Icon Corner

They all freak me out, even as a child when looking at images they even make heavenly seem so dreary.

But as I have said before, if you put every Jesus in a police line up and chose one of them (as the true image after the flesh) all the rest of them could actually go home.

So you never know who you are standing before really if you bow the knee to it anyway. And Jesus was the image of the INVISIBLE God and appeared in another form too. And besides it says we should know no man (not even Jesus) after the flesh, and thats all you can know him by in concrete and paint.

The mystery is Christ IN you. I find looking at a Jesus outside of me sorta makes it harder to contemplate that greater mystery.

Of course it is.

Same reason your church is divided with RCC.

There is a key difference. There is a Tradition in both of ours, which is why there are very few divisions among us. And those divisions are constant focuses of our discussion.

But the Evangelical Protestant is his own Pope. He can choose from a buffet of teaching and be "Christian" according to a relativistic concept.

But Christianity is not relativistic. It is exclusive by nature.

There is ONE Doctrine, ONE Body, and ONE Spirit in that ONE Body. (Ephesians 4) Not many bodies. Not many divisions.

As Thekla said, the focus isn't the physical appearance of Christ. The focus is the incarnation of Christ. He was physical, so he could be seen, felt, and touched.

I agree. But as I noted before, icons are deliberately not to look realistic.

It is not the way someone looks in life that it is their purpose, but to convey a teaching on spiritual truth.

Thats not hard to imagine without an image after the flesh of him (or whats supposed to be him) and that too depending on the artist rendering.

Christ in us is harder to contemple (at least to me) with a big cement figure of a man outside of me

Gotcha

I went to school with some folks who attended a Swiss boarding school where Stallone worked (in his youth).

Can't say I was ever a fan, but I also never saw his movies ...

That makes sense ^_^

although I don't 'have' images when contemplating, so haven't thought of it in that way ...

Western religious art is usually realistic, so it's not similar to iconography in that sense.

Iconography falls (at least according to some academics) under abstract art -- as it is not interested in expressing realism (satisfaction with the way things are) but instead looks towards spiritual fulfillment.

I do wonder how realistic the brass serpent was ... there's no way to tell. At any rate, it's pretty clear it was being treated as an idol eventually.
