I took an elective course in language development once, and Pinker's The Language Instinct was the assigned textbook. I read the thing in a week, ignoring the prof's reading schedule. That got me to take more courses in linguistics, which turned out to be my best subject.
Also perhaps of interest, the course was taught by Laura-Ann Petitto, who was one of the first undergrad students who worked with Nim Chimpsky. So she had first hand experience with the language acquisition of apes, and how different it actually is.
Nim Chimpsky?
wouldn't there have been apes, chimps and gorillas aboard Noah's arkThere will always be apes as long as we are around, because we are apes. Your question is thus, "why are there other apes, if we evolved from apes?" Simple. Evolution is not a ladder-like progression, it is a branching tree or bush. Thus, chimpanzees and gorillas are just as evolved along their own paths as we are.

Rotherham) Genesis 7:1 And Yahweh said to Noah "Enter thou and all thy house, into the ark for thee, have I seen righteous before me in this generation.
2 Of all the clean beasts, shalt thou take to thee by sevens, a male and his female,--and of the beasts that are not clean, shall be two, a male and his female.
3 Also, of the bird of the heavens by sevens, male and female,--to keep alive a seed on the face of all the earth.
4 For in seven days more, I am sending rain on the earth forty days and forty nights,--so will I wipe out all the living things which I have made, from off the face of the ground.

Nim Chimpsky?
Is this the name of one of the apes?
It's an interesting story. She went into it fully expecting to be able to teach that chimp sign language. And while they were certainly able to teach him signs, they weren't able to get him to comprehend or use those signs as a language.

Even the experiments with Washoe and others proved that apes do not have an inborn human language facility. True, in some experiments female chimps were able to teach their babies a few signs, but it was not significant, and the babies were not able to "fill in the gaps in sign language" as human babies are able to do.
Chimps lack the creative ability of humans.
Interestingly there are multiple study of human twins who will develop their own language that their own mother cannot understand. These twins can then gift this special language to other babies who have close contact with them because humans have this innate/inborn language facility that enables them to ACQUIRE language easily. Second language acquisition is much harder than first language acquisition.
Scientists worked overtime to invent...Question: How did humans get this infinite ability to combine words, create sentences, and then revise them in almost infinite ways?
