  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it normal for a newborn to sleep all day? I know dumb question but she sleeps so much! Shes up for bottle, and diaper change. she was sleeping good through the night up until last night. no matter what I did she didnt want to sleep!! any suggestions, or is this just a normal thing for a 8 day old baby?

I remember trying to best to keep Emily awake as much as I could during the day when she was an infant. I would sit with her and play with her musical toys..but that just lulled her to sleep, as did her swing (which also had sound and lights) and her bouncy chair. They finally get straightened out. Emily started sleeping through the night at 3 months (but I hear most babies don't do that that early). Just enjoy this time..wheather she's sleeping or not.

It is normal but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be proactive to create a good sleeper and make sure days and nights don't get mixed up. She will sleep *a lot* but if she sleeps too much during the day then she might want to be awake at night

Encourage day time alertness:
--keep natural light in the house... pull back curtains, make sure she gets exposure to the filtered light. This helps their body align with when is "day" and when it "night."
--After you feed her eat time attempt to play with her, talk to her, let her know now is a much better time to be awake than at night.
--Play music in the house
--Although you will go places that are crazy busy sometimes, like restaurants and the mall, don't overdo it because the tendency for a newborn is to sleep straight through the chaos because its too much for a newborn to process .... and if they sleep during the day, they will be awake at night

Encourage night time sleeping:
--Make sure its dark where baby sleeps
--And boring. Really boring. ;)

Generally I find if I focus on the days, the nights align themselves with no problem.

Another tip for helping baby learn day from night is to *NOT* tiptoe around during the day when baby is sleeping. Just carry on with your normal day time routine. This way the baby will figure out that daytime if for sound and play and activeness and night is for sleep!

The day that Tara was up all night could have been a little growth spurt. But I agree with the others, don't tip tioe around her while she sleeps in the day and make the house nice and quiet and boring at night.

I don't turn on the light for night time feeds, and that way I can't look my baby in the eye or smile and play (these things wake Baby up more). Our night time feeds are really to-the-point as a result and Bub goes straight back to sleep.

When can I trim her nails??

Some babies need their nails trimmed as soon as they pop out. DD had hers trimmed while we were still in hospital because she kept scratching her face.

I found it was easiest to do them after I had given her a bath. I tried baby clippers a few times but I found it much easier to actually bite them myself - that way I could feel with my mouth where her skin was so I didn't hurt her.
