  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi squeekers . You'll get Christian's who say it's a sin and those who say it isn't. I watch Charmed every now and then and I see nothing wrong with it - I'm not into witchcraft, I just like the family values it sometimes portrays.

I personally wouldn't call this sin. Just unwise, in the sense that we need to fill our minds with good things, not with, shall I call it 'rubbish'? (whether fun to watch or not)! I'm VERY conscious of what I watch on TV and what it may be doing to my brain. I want to have GOOD brain-traces up there, not bad ones! But everyone will be different, and you should aim for a BALANCE in your life that will bring you closer to the Lord, and be pleasing to Him.

Hope that may be a bit of a guide for you.

Blessings!

The idea that merely reading/viewing that kind of thing is a sin is very new.(I'm going to guess the Victorian Era, as that's where a good portion of what's wrong with Christianity and society today comes from)

Ever read much Medieval/Rennaisance Christian writing? It contains tons of references to Classical mythology, especially Homer and Virgil. Many of the Classical stories and poems were long interpreted as Christian allegory. They recognized a myth can contain Christian truths even if it uses non-Christian aspects. And take a look at Rennaisance and Medieval art- TONS of CLassical themes. Artists like Lucas Cranach the Elder could paint a Trinity and turn around and paint a Judgement of Paris.

Besides, the bible itself contains plenty of evil within it's pages. Is it a sin to read the story of David, Bathsheba and Uriah the Hittite?

MY DEAR SISTER,

The best thing you could do is to pray and find out what God thinks on the subject. He will direct you according to His will if you ask Him as listen honestly for His reply.

Might i just say that there are many things in this world that are perhaps technically not "sins" but are, never the less, not in our best interests as Christians to take into our minds. Let God guide you in this regard.

As Paul put it, "WHATEVER IS TRUE, WHATEVER IS NOBLE, WHATEVER IS RIGHT, WHATEVER IS PURE, WHATEVER IS LOVELY, WHATEVER IS ADMIRABLE--IF ANYTHING IS EXCELLENT OR PRAISEWORTHY--THINK ABOUT SUCH THINGS." (Philippians 4:8) Does "Charmed" meet this criteria?

A BOND-SLAVE OF CHRIST,
ephraim

The way I see it is would Jesus do it? We are made to become more like Christ, are you becoming closer to Christ through watching the program? I don't think you are.
I've actually stopped watching TV altogether now, there's just so much evil on there these days.
God bless.

I'm a Christian that reads Harry Potter and watches Heroes, and I don't consider those things a sin.

I tried watching Charmed, though, but I never could really understand it. :/

Also, I used to watch Sabrina the teenage Witch, and didn't consider it a sin. Funny show, though.

squeekers - VERY TRUE, and great advice!

Pasat - Just one thing. In my (long) experience I find that that people asking 'would Jesus do it' is mostly too subjective. If it helps you that's great. But everyone will give such a different answer. I mean how can you really KNOW ultimately what Jesus would do?

People will say similar with 'following Jesus'. I know what they mean, but to strictly follow Him and how He lived would mean becoming a Jew and keeping the Saturday Sabbath, etc., etc.

I hope you can see what I'm trying to say.

Blessings and good wishes!

yep...i can see what you're saying. I agree that we don't know what He would ultimately do in a situation but I still believe that it does make you think about what you're doing and your motives are etc. Sometimes that's what we need to focus on.
Thanks for your input though, I'm sure it'll have me thinking for a while!

You're more than welcome for anything I can pass on that the Lord's taught me.

Yep, I agree that it DOES make you think about motives and actions, and in that sense is a great aid! What you're talking about is 'awareness' I think - and you do seem to have that, Pasat. So well done!

Giving up TV is quite something.

Bless you heaps!

well....I think that would be something you need to pray about and ask for God's help in discernment. Personally, I don't watch it because of the witchcraft connection. However, some people would say I'm sinning by watching CSI because of the images of death and various other negatives. Sometimes I have to just stay away from tv altogether just to feel more clear about things.

The problem with seemingly harmless movies and television programs is that demons are attracted to entertainment involving the occult. My personal experience with this occurred when I was getting ready for bed while listening to the Coast To Coast radio talk show that was featuring a "ghost hunter" who goes into people's homes to try to find ghosts.I watched in astonishment as a bottle slowly moved to the edge of a shelf in my bathroom and then fell into the toilet.About three minutes later the guest started discussing objects that ghosts move around in haunted houses.Needless to say, that was the last time I listened to that radio program.

The much more serious problem is that the demons that are attracted by occult entertainment sometimes possess or take over the minds of those who are in the room resulting in psychiatric problems that can last a lifetime without a spiritual healing which very few ever receive.

Wow, that is extreme! Imo you would have to do more than watch a tv show or listen to radio to allow evil spirits access into your life, like dabbling with the devil by using taro cards are somehow giving permission to satan to come to you thriugh the medium of cards etc.

Iow a christian needs to give permission to satan for the Holy Spirit to not protect them from evil.

I've never seen it for the same reason as HC i just have no interest in watching a show about witches. So having never seen it i can't tell you its wrong to watch it but i would say you need to ask yourself some questions.

Does your conscience bother you when you watch it?

Is your doctrine shaped by anything you see on the show?

is your spiritual life affected in any way shape or form by watching the show?

Is it a stumbling to anyone who knows you watch it?

if you can answer yes to even one of these questions i'd say its time to turn off the TV

Good points.

I think it sometimes happens through fear of inevitability.

Picture a scenario like that continuing, where you might be afraid the spirits have been there all along and you won't be able to get rid of them. Cowering puts you in a defensive position, not offensive, and they can hang out and bother you.

If we know what the terms are, that God gave us authority to cast out demons, then we are less likely to give ground.

If you have any concern right now that you let any take a foothold, then speak out loud to them right now -- tell them they have no right to be there, and they must leave forever... go to the pit.

God is very forgiving. Your post is sort of an act of repentance. So just pick up and move on!

It's not a sin to watch that show (I watch it!). Just keep in mind that it's fiction and don't allow yourself to become envious of the characters in wanting to have powers like that. Thinking of it just as entertainment is ok with full knowledge of how God feels about witchcraft.

It's up to your self-tolerance? Do you feel that it brings you down from your walk w/ God? If so, then maybe you want to reconsider.

Like myself for example, I don't feel any issue watching something like Lord of the Rings. It's more for entertainement purposes. I'm not going to go off and look for Hobbits or worship the fire eye (whatever it's name is).

Now if I starting watching a show or movie about satanic worshippers or whatever, I probably wouldn't want to pollute my mind w/ stuff like that.

I guess you can say, well what's the difference? I guess there's not that much of a difference so that's why I say it's up to your own preference and level of tolerance.a
