• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok, lately I have been struggling with the subject of God speaking to me, like was it really him, or just something I made up on my own. Well last night I was reading in my bible, and I have a minumum amount of pages I would like to read each day. But The chapter ended and barely fell short of the minimum amount. Then I had a thought 'if I dont read to there then all of the superstition stuff will start to come true' (I recently had problems with superstition stuff, but I am for the most part over it now). But these thoughts that might be from god arent really normal thoughts, its like they come from 'the person inside of me', or maybe my subconsious. Like I can be thinking about something else and this thought will come up in the 'back ground' if you will. I would be fully aware of it and know what it is. Maybe my attention just drifts over to the other thought instead of what I was originally thinking about. ANYWAYS, now Im worried that it really was my subconsious and now I have a much bigger, more severe problem then ocd. Like maybe the superstition thoughts (jinksing myself, #13 making bad stuff come true) will start to come true, beause after all, this didnt feel or seem like a normal ocd thought, it was maybe from my sub consious. Please respond with anything you would like to say. Thanks and God Bless!

Two things are certain:

1.) This is nothing to worry about. Don't even give it another second of thought.

2.) God isn't worried about if you read the exact same amount a day. God doesn't have OCD and if you feel apprehension that something superstitious may happen, you know it's not from God.

This surely isn't the sign of some bad mental illness, you're just being too self-conscious. It's best to just let things like this slide through the mind without any attention given to it. God is love, rest in His love. :)

but i guess what im scared about is that since the thought was different, it might of been straight from my subconsious mind. And now that I didnt read to the minumum like the thought said to or else superstition stuff would come true, my subconsious mind might start 'jinxing' myself, or when the number 13 pops up it will make my thoughts come true ( dying in my sleep is my major thing right now).

I assure you with complete confidence before Christ that none of these superstitions or fears will come true. If they come into the mind let them pass, and don't worry how they entered the mind. Don't waste your life worrying about such things, because God loves you and only has your best in mind. None of these fearful things will happen to you.

( dying in my sleep is my major thing right now).
I used to have a problem with that too and used to have to pray that neither my loved ones nor I would die that night. Later I realized that when God did take me, in a way, it was a good thing because I would get to be with him.

Hi Live for Christ...just to say that I know how scary it can be when you think "but what if this isn't OCD this time?" I think a lot of people with OCD get that and I think it's almost par for the course with a disorder that is made up of so much doubting that we end up doubting either if we have OCD or if this latest thought is OCD or not. I also know how tricky and sometimes highly anxiety provoking it can be trying to determine if something is from God or not. I think people without OCD get this problem but with us it's so much worse and often associated with a lot of turmoil. I think firstly that if you're worried about something superstitous happening that sounds more like the OCD worrying you. You said that you're worried it could be your subconscious speaking which would be worse than your OCD...would you be able to explain that a bit more as I'm not sure I fully understand. All I know is there is God and there is satan and thankfully God is the most powerful...there is nothing of a purely superstitous nature that has any basis in reality. Satan would like to deceive people into thinking superstition is real cos at least then they're not thinking about him and then about God. Anything that will keep our focus off God is good news for satan. OCD is a horrible thing to dealwith and when it affects your faith it's a double whammy...I know it's easy to say don't worry but hard to do...all I can say is keep posting and getting people's input and wisdom on this and try if you can to keep coming back to God who doesn't change even when our fears and thoughts do...I pray you'll get some peace from this soon! Take care, Rachel

When I was talking about that it could have been my subconscious, I meant that maybe it was my sub conscious and not my ocd, and if it was my sub conscious then it might really come true because the sub conscious controls every thing and is more powerful then the conscious mind.

If you truly believe that, then you're in for a lifetime of anxiety. The subconscious mind is by no means sound, and if you think it calls the shots you're in trouble. Listen to the promises of an all loving God made to you through His Son Jesus Christ and never worry about those inner thoughts that create apprehension.

Hi Live For Christ...thanks for the clarification. You're right in that any part of your mind can powerful...God certainly made us to be amazing beings! But I agree with Christian Sojourner in that if you truly believe the sub conscious is more powerful than the concious mind and controls everything then that does seem to make for an anxious state of mind! It would also seem to make us people who cannot make decisions or live a life in the freedom that Christ died to bring us. I don't know a whole heap about psychology and would be interested to know where this idea comes from as it's hard to discuss it without really knowing what angle you're coming from. All I can say is that whichever part of the mind is most powerful, God is more powerful still and the subconsious has no bearing on superstitions. Superstitions come from a basis of fear and hard though it is to believe God does not want us to be fearful people. So if God is all powerful and does not want us to be afraid it would seem a contradiction if He were to then operate through superstitious beliefs. Sorry, does that make any sense? If not I'll try again. I'd love to understand a bit more where you are coming from...hope you are having a better day...take care, Rachel

Thanks for the help everyone. I have been doing MUCH better, almost like I don't even have ocd. I have read that the subconsious mind creates the way you feel about stuff. Like if you really want to be a millionaire, and everyday when you woke up you read a sign that said 'i will become a millionaire' and you constantly repeated it in your mind you would eventually 'program' your subconsious to drive you to do what ever is nessicary to become a millionaire. They say you can program it like you can a computer. I guess a easy way to say it would be is that your subconsious is the program you are running, and your consious is what you choose to do in that program. It's something worth looking up.
