  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The secular media already delights is making Christians look like idiots. there's no need in feeding them ammunition.

to be fair EVERY time there is a earthquake or something goes wrong it's gods judgement on something or other.

I find the whole angry-god-in-the-sky concept rather primitive, so I don't live my life cringing in expectation of some cosmic temper-tantrum.

Good for you.

Living in Florida, there was not much to see. We did joke a bit about the end of the world, but as Lutherans it was only a joke.

To be fair, natural events, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, are increasingly well understood by science and can even be predicted. Does this mean that science is reading God's mind? If people take preemptive action to minimize earthquake damage does that mean they are thwarting God's will? Here is someone who thought so:

"If God had decreed from all eternity that a certain person should die of smallpox, it would be a frightful sin to avoid and annul that decree by the trick of vaccination." --- Timothy Dwight, Congregationalist minister and President of Yale University from 1795 to 1817.

hehe sorry I meant that sarcasticly, I was commenting on how someone blames the earthquakes on gays/atheists/muslims/liberals/abortion/scantily clad woman you name it every time we have a earthquake and tries to say, "We need to stop X thing I hate."

The irony in the conflation of natural disasters with God's wrath is especially noticeable when considering how the Bible Belt and Tornado Alley are basically the same thing. If tornadoes=wrath, then perhaps there are some long-held paradigms in that geographical area which are in need of serious shifting.

Why do believers keep saying the Solar Eclipse is a sign of God's pending judgment?
We are told there will be signs. Luke 21:25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea."

yeah I mean it's obvious it's something that happens ever decade, rather then something extremly rare.

My faith tells me that God has a "preferential option" for the poor. This is a recurrent theme in the Gospels as well.

If a tsunami hits a beach filled with luxury condos, very few people die. When a tsunami hit Indonesia, hundreds of thousands did. In every natural disaster, flood, drought, famine, etc. it is the poor who suffer the most and who take longest to recover.

Since this is true, why does God keep torturing the people for whom he has a preferential option. Case closed.

Well - "judgement begins at the House of God."

Do you punish your own kids for their misbehaving, or the neighbor's kids?

First of all, you're calling Donald Trump America's "punishment" when you say he us Gid's choicr. I agree that his election was catastrophic. I also believe that the overwhelming majority of his "victims" had nothing to do with whatever alleged wrongs Americans committed. For example, the climate change deniers will cause droughts, famines, and devastating hurricanes and tsunamis all across the world. As Pope Francis wrote in his encyclical, "Laudato Si," all of these catastrophic events disproportionately affect the poor. Secondly, the disastrous education (?) policies of Betsy DeVos and proposed Medicaid cuts hurt babies and children---what did they do to "deserve" it? God is too smart--and merciful--to be involved in such an inconsistent theme....

God isn't behind the election of Trump, but God gives people free will. If they refuse to study the issues, if their values are materialistic and selfish, then they have punished themselves--pulling a whole lot of innocent people, me included, into it :(

Living in Florida, there was not much to see. We did joke a bit about the end of the world, but as Lutherans it was only a joke.

I remember a few years ago, when John Hagee and Mark Blitz were completely losing it over the fact that there were going to be four lunar eclipses and a solar eclipse in some specific order that they thought portended doom. There were a few people in the area where I live who were bizarrely concerned over it, and even though I was Catholic at the time, I was like...guys, it's just really basic orbital stuff. Calm down a little. You're gonna be okay.

I was able to watch the eclipse from on top of a mountain near where I live. It was only partial, but extremely close to being full. Kind of surreal seeing the world around you only about as bright as at sunset even though it's the middle of the day. I wasn't able to get any good pictures because I didn't feel like pointing my DSLR directly at the sun, but I did get a few quick shots when it was as close as it got to totality.

I do but not nearly enough.

His judgment is something I fear, but I still sin. So I probably don't fear his wrath as much as I should.

You shouldn't fear someone who loves you. If you do, if you're afraid they'll strike you down or something, it's a bad relationship and they don't truly love you.

Which goes for ANYONE who claims they want a relationship with you, by the way. And other people claiming some other person wants a relationship with you doesn't fly.
