Sola Scriptura is overrated, the first christians didn't need it so neither do we.

Sola Scriptura is used by many so that they may enjoy their own interpretation of issues that affect our daily living—-
divorce, remarriage, woman pastors, homosexual marriage, abortion, contraception, sterilization, in-vitro fertilization, serrogate motherhood, polygamy, genetic engineering and some others. How does one use "sola scriptura" to arrive at a correct biblical interpretation? In the realm of sexual morality this is particularly crucial since lives are at stake.
Yet there are thousands of factions in "sola scriptura" all disagreeing with each other on the core doctrines of the Christian faith.

The choice is between your own personal interpretations (relying on your own wisdom and human reasoning) or that of the Church founded by Jesus that has taught the same faith since the first century. Those who are humble and love God choose the Church. Those who are arrogant and swollen with pride choose themselves.



In reality, the highest authority for you is yourself since you just interpret whatever verses you like to say whatever you want to believe. If the Bible was the highest authority, you would submit to the Church that gave us the Bible and has understood it consistently since the first century.



The Bible is the written tradition of the Church. There aren't any church traditions that contradict scripture even though modern erroneous interpretations may not agree with it.

I think you're kinda taking liberty that those who are well grounded in scripture all are puffed up with pride. No one can know what"s in another man's head.

I personally experienced 2 huge miricals in my life because I kept my nose in the Word. Without knowing or suspecting anything another person spoke to me about my struggles and God breathed life into their words and I was healed. They were not aware that they were used by God to reach me with the faith to believe what they spoke. But Scripture tells us that faith cometh by hearing and hearing comes from reading the Word. The able to "hear" from God comes by reading His Word.
He who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
It is my strong personal belief that reading Scripture places us in a position to be given unmeritted faith at the time He choses to speak Truth to us.

Well just throw out the NT then. They didn't have any of that. Just live by the law.

One could argue that confession is used by many so they may enjoy sinful indulgences. It takes all kinds. There are many "traditions" that are counter Scripture.

@Albion - I'm pretty sure my last statement is easy to misconstrue. It was partially a meditation on what would become of the faith if all of the bibles were burned all of a sudden, I trust Jesus to continue to build His church.

Scripture is the written word. There are also people who have received direct revelation from God and have learned from experience. Jesus was preaching to people who were Torah readers or who had heard Torah passages read in the synagogue:

John 5:39 "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me. 40 Yet you will not come to me, that you may have life. 41 I don't receive glory from men. 42 But I know you, that you don't have God's love in yourselves. 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you don't receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.

These had scripture, but Jesus' witness exceeded the value of the scripture they had searched.

I would not recommend discarding the scriptures. There are some verses that may keep you from going astray. It is more common to be able to find one who has read the scriptures than to find one who is approved by God.

In Acts 6 the apostles dedicated themselves to ministering the word. They appointed deacons to oversea the daily distribution of food to those in need.

That friend was sharing the gospel he learned from the bible, or from another who learned from the bible, most likely both. The truth is, without the bible, we would be ignorant about what love truly is, and about many other things. The law of the heart isn't about not having scripture but is about putting the scripture in our heart as the spirit leads us to do so. Christ sent disciples to teach us his commands, and he didn't do so in vain

I would say that we do need it in the sense of the messages and truths it contains.
