  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sola Scriptura is overrated, the first christians didn't need it so neither do we.

I didn't get that Michael thinks of himself as a prophet, W2L, but just that the Holy Spirit guides each believer's understanding.

How that could happen without the person knowing the Scriptures sufficiently to be led into the correct understanding escapes me, but that's probably a topic for another thread.

I said he seems to imply. I'm trying to discover his beliefs. When you ask him where he learns things from he acts like it was without scripture. Remember when we were asking where he got his doctrine from? Did he ever answer?

@Albion - an instance in scripture I saw that was similar in circumstance was the Hebrews in the wilderness who walked around the mountain for 40 years and learned from the wonders of God. Something about the intimate contact of God nourished their understanding ... in a way that was not duplicated under the Levites.

@davidcrosby @Albion @W2L - I really like discussing scripture obviously, I have issues about how it is applied. So when I come out and say ... sola scriptura is not necessary ... probably relates to the Sola part, there are many ways God speaks to us. But in focusing solely on scripture as a means to hear from God, the natural sense of compassion becomes lost. There needs to be balance.

That's not how I view sola scripture. To me its spirit and scripture working together.

Okay, which sins are okay for people to have in fellowship, and which sins are ones that make it impossible to even approach the assembly?

@W2L - That's good. What matters is how it plays out. I'm more of a Useful Scriptura proponent ;)

I know what you mean, but that's not an excuse to throw out scripture. Its an excuse to throw out the assembly.

@W2L - And many people have done that and church populations have thinned out because of it... however, what I am saying is not to throw out Scripture ... just the interpretative lense, sola scriptura. The bible speaks of a number of ways to hear from God, the sola is unbiblical.

I'm not so sure. I would rather struggle with something that is wrong, rather than to justify it.

I guess that I don't see how taking God's word as one's guide--and the only guide that the whole church accepts as genuine revelation--causes anyone to lose balance or a sense of compassion.

@Albion - That's probably a good thing. There's some things I kind of wish I could unsee.

@W2L - That's fine. I don't set out to change people's minds, just to communicate what I've found helpful. And in some cases clarify what I'm talking about.
