Most men were illiterate in those days, the majority of authority had its origins in oral tradition, Jews themselves did not use the Tanakh by itself as a rule and authority of the faith. The fact we now have scripture doesn’t mean we should use scripture alone for the faith.Which really isn't the point. We now have Scripture, and every one of the mainline churches--Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant--considers the Bible to be divine revelation. The idea that God could not have inspired men of his choosing to record his will and intentions for mankind (as we read in Scripture was the case) so long as some men were illiterate just doesn't make sense.
