Sodom and Gomorrah

How come when Lot, his wife and two daughters fleed outside the city of Sodom, Lot's wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt but, later, when Abraham looked tward the city and saw what happened, why didn't he turn into a pillar of salt?

Please help me, for I do not understand.

The way I understand the passage is Lot's wife looked back during the actual destruction while Abraham looked after it was complete....

Yes, it was the next morning that Lot looked and saw the destruction that happened. He was not to watch the destruction as it happened.


Genesis 19:27 ¶ And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:
28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

Lots wife looked back in the sense of Longing for what she had left behind. She didn't want to leave although the cities were wicked. This is evident from the fact that the Angel had to practically drag them out.

I think the reason she turned to salt was, as Light Bearer said, she looked back in longing when God had told them to leave the city and not to look upon it's destruction. She disobeyed God...even after God had showed such mercy in sparing Lot's family.
