  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Soda Consumption May Accelerate Aging : News : University Herald

For the study, researchers compared telomere length and sugar-sweetened soda consumption for each participant at a single time point. Based on the way telomere length shortens on average with chronological age, the researchers calculated that daily consumption of a 20-ounce soda was associated with 4.6 years of additional biological aging. This effect on telomere length is comparable to the effect of smoking, or to the effect of regular exercise in the opposite, anti-aging direction.

I wouldn't be shocked, a few of the ingredients in soda are carcinogenic. You don't even want to know about bacon.
Ya ... and fish has Hz in it and so on and so farce.

Just don't get your fish from the Gulf, eh?

As they say:

Amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Deepwater Horizon.

No, I mean manufacturers know these chemicals are carcinogens, you can even look them up if you like. But oh gosh, the nitrates in bacon are just foul in regards to health.

I know all this sort of stuff, and I consume/use the products anyways. Why? Because YOLO, I am not going to make my life significantly less enjoyable to extend it by 5-10 years.

I guarantee you that I haven't consumed my last Coke yet either. :)

The thing is, it is not always as simple as the calories you expend from exercise, compared to what you consume.

If you consume too much sugar, insulin will grab the sugar from the blood and store much of it as fat in short order. Much of this is dependent on your fitness level. A very fit person, say a long distance runner, will end up storing much of the sugar as glycogen fuel in the legs, while the sedentary person will store most of it as fat.

You want to hear the real scary thing? One pound of adipose tissue (fat) is equivalent to 3500 calories and the average person would need to walk and or run, 35 miles to burn the fuel, available in one pound of fat. Further problem, when you exercise, you are actually burning most sugar, especially if you work out at a high level. With that said, if you work out hard and your body adapts to this stress, you will burn a much higher degree of fat at rest, so your body can store the sugar as glycogen to be used during the exercise. If you don't exercise, no need for your body to store glycogen and most of the sugar goes to fat.

This is why you can see endurance athletes eat like slobs and they don't gain an once.

Most packaged food and beverages in stores, even healthy options are not ideal for our bodies. Fruit and vegetables juices are rarely as beneficial as the whole produce.

I am not surprised about the findings of the study.

However did homo sapiens manage to survive for 200,000 years without having all theses experts on hand, to tell them what is and isn't safe to eat? With metabolisms which are that delicate, they have no right to have survived that long.

The physically active body burns fuel at a higher rate and there is less chance of excess fuel being stored as fat or causing other negative consequences from a physical standpoint.

In the last century, human's physical activity levels have declined and in the last couple of decades, they have declined dramatically. Hence, the growing obesity problem.

The human body was meant to be active and if it is sedentary for long periods of time, bad things happen.
