I think by "social gospel" you're referring to a political spin on the gospel. Jesus spoken almost nothing about politics and social programs. Social gospel tends to misrepresent Jesus' teachings for one's own political agenda. For example they make take Jesus teachings about generosity and claim that Jesus advocates communism. Foolish stuff like that.

A late 19th century Protestant religious movement that focused on social justice and improving living conditions for the poor or marginalized, especially in urban areas. It has had lasting influence, especially on mainline Protestant churches in the US.

Social justice has always been part of evangelicalism, especially in the teachings of Wesley. Antecedents can be seen in early Christian thought, for instance in Basil of Caesarea.

Its maybe an example of the openness texts to interpretation. All those denominations each quoting chapter and verse. Another example may be that of Liberation Theology.

There is probably a strong imprint of each leaders character on the themes emphasised. An indication of their values, historical context etc.

Very true. Social justice and support for the poor and marginalized (widows, orphans) has been part of God's will for his people since Sinai.

Where "social gospel" goes wrong is when that concern eclipses or eliminates the call to repent from sin, believe in the atonement of Our Lord, and living a life of scriptural righteousness.

Hey, I felt privileged reading about social gospel in a theology book. Its fab to chat about it.

Can anyone tell me about New England Transcedentalism or that fellow Rauschenbusch? Both were involved in the social gospel movement.


The former, the NETs apparently believed in some kind of private spiritual insight, open to all I think, separate from institutionalised faith...? And had a Kantian intellectual heritage.

Was Emmerson's "intuition" a faculty of recognising religious truth, especially in that multicultural melting pot of the USA?

And maybe a way of strengthening the claim that social reality can be perceived in a socially concerned way without having to be Marxist. A Christian can have the similar 'intuitions' and not be a communist aetiologically? Like a faith based get out clause form being so labelled?

It is any of several (or just one?) false gospels.

"Biblical" in that it was prophesied and has always been known to be part of babylon/ the beast system/ destroying billions of souls .....

I read the phiolosoper Wittgenstein had a conversion experience in WW2, relating to the sermon on the mount, amidst all that social hardship and suffering.

Thanks for all those links. I never realised the social gospel was reincarnate. Do any of you have an opinion on secular democracy, is it a heretical position to link faith and Christian ethics too closely with any political party or ideology? After all the likes of the Catholic Church has been with us 2000 years, but democracy just a couple of hundred years loosely speaking. So "I'm conservative" or "I'm democrat" is quite an innovation.
