Snowy Roads?

Is it just me that is freaked out of bad roads? I'm recently married and out of college, and will admitt to you that I've driven in the snow twice, in an area where is snows at least 6 months out of the year. Which means I'm spoiled and get rides from other people.
Today it's snowing and I have to work at 12... my hubby is in class until 1. Luckily my dad works in town too, and so he's taking half his lunch break to drive me to work because I freaked out when I saw the roads get all slushy.
Am I the only one? I feel totally stupid for calling my daddy for help, but, I would feel even worse if I wrecked my car or hit someone else.
Just thought I'd share my little frustration of the day and see if anyone else has this problem.

Sorry.. I wish I could empathize with you, but it doesnt snow where I live..

But if you cant help but freak out, then there is no shame asking for help. Its better to be safe than to be sorry. You have to push your limits occasionally though. Test your fears. Have a great Valentines Day.


On a side note.. if you're in SD can I ask you a question.. Ever hear of the band in my avatar? They are from there.. and they are my favorite band.

Thanks, Dave. Yeah, I tested my limits by getting married and leaving college into the "real world"... so I'm a little fear-tested out. LOL. I'll try next time with the snow time...
PS You are LUCKY that there isn't snow where you live!

i love the snow in minnesota it snows tons and i have a little chevy car and i love doing donuts in parking lots and totally just got in an accident because of ice the other day with my friend and loved it lol cause we totally did like circles on the highway it was tight but i know where ur coming from!

I HATE driving in snow. I spent last winter in Philadelphia and I was terrified everytime I got in the car, and it was a mild winter then. I know how you feel, and it sucks

Well I'm only scared by the other drivers. If they don't act responsibly, drive defensively, and do what they should to be safe... then it's freaky. I take my time, pay attention to how fast i need to go in order to still be safe and be able to stop... and i just take care so i don't crash. basically, i hope everyone else does the same.

my wheels are JUNK in the winter. I can't believe I didn't buy winter tires last year. I mean... I spin my wheels more in this car than I ever did in my old one.

One of my friends gets [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]ed off that everyone goes slower in the slush and snow. She weaves in traffic, enjoys sliding into other people's lanes, and just finds making everyone else freak out hilarious. I never want to drive with her in the winter because she thinks people are stupid for going the speed they need to go in order to be safe.

road hogs, road rage drivers, and dangerous people like her (and most everyone who thinks SUV's are impregnable fortresses that will never have accidents) [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] me off to no end.

I can understand your panic, though I have to admit I do find it a mite humorous. I suggest doing some simple driving to get accustomed to the snow and ice... and remember, if you are beginning to slide on snow or ice let up on your brake - locking up your wheels will make things worse.

I don't mind driving in the snow. It's all the stupid drivers I mind driving in the snow.

I definitely understand where you're coming from. I absolutely hate driving on roads in bad conditions, but I've done it before when it's been necessary. It's not so much snow that bothers me, though...It's more the ice, because once you hit ice, there's not much that can be done. At least there's some kind of control in the snow.

As far as what really freaks me out...It's more other drivers than myself! I know that I drive carefully. I act responsibly when I'm behind the wheel, and I don't let other things like cell phones or the radio distract me from what I'm really supposed to be doing. Other drivers, though. That's basically up to chance.

Don't feel stupid about calling your dad. It's definitely better to be safe than sorry.

Only 20 mph?.... though I encourage you to be smart and safe while doing stunts like that - especially at higher speeds.

I was hoping not to encourage others to be a crazy person like i used to be... but i don't do that anymore... and not just cuz it doesnt snow much here....

Stunts are fun, if you do them in the proper way. You need to know your skill level as well as everything that's involved. At times I'm rather a stunt junkie, but I never try to do anything without first having some safety or failsafe procedures in place.

*Side comment about men - it seems that the more testosterone flows through our veins the lower our IQ drops.

**Back to the snow topic.... It would be wise to become accustomed to driving in the snow, especially if it snows regularly where you are at. Go out for short drives to become familiar with the ice and snow. Your father won't be around forever to drive you around.

best tip I ever got: when fishtailing (back end of the car sliding--for example-- to the left while you're trying to turn right) turn the wheel the way your car WANTS to go and the fishtailing will stop. So basically turn the wheel INTO the skid to stop skidding.
