• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Best way to stop is to wean yourself off of it. I smoked 2 packs a day for about 4 or 5 years straight...even smoked newports for a year or so. It took me a couple years, but i evntually cut down to nothing...and it was pretty painless...didn't have to think about it much...just kinda grew out of it as i grew stronger in my faith....The main thing that had me was habit, but as soon as i weaned myself out of that environment, it was easy to wean off of smoking.

I also never gained weight when I stopped smoking....but if you want to cut the weight down, eat clean..don't use smoking to do it..smoking doesn't do much for weight anyway. If you eat clean and keep your daily calories down you'll lose more weight in 3 months than smoking all the cigarettes in the world will.

Jim, I know what your going through because I'm going through the exact same thing right now. I'm a smoker and I want to quit but maybe my want is not big enough or something I don't know. I will admit that I like smoking, but at the same time I wish I never started and could just quit now. I've quit twice. The first time was with the drug welbutrin and the second time was cold turkey. The welbutrin was amazing and it took all my cravings away, I didn't even desire a cig one time. But I ran out of the medicine and started back smoking. That lasted a short time. I didn't have the money to continue the perscription, the ones I had were samples the doctor gave me. Anywho, I quit later on and quit for nine whole months. I didn't even want a cig when I started back that time, I was just straight stupid, that is the only explation for it, just plain stupid. And now deep down I really really want to quit but I really really don't know what it keeping me from it :(

I'll be praying for you in your struggle, I pray you do quit and quit for good.

In Christ,
Anna

thanks guys,

Anna maybe we could set a date and work towards cutting down for that date and then go cold turkey!! let me know

god bless and thanks !

This could work, but both of us have to be fully ready to do this. I'm really afraid of quiting and I don't fully know way. Maybe it's because I've quit other times just to go back and start again, I want to quit for good and never never pick one up again and I don't know if I can do that. I mean I quit for nine whole months and I'm now back to where I started. I'm afraid of failing again :help:

This might sound like a long time, but I was thinking cutting down date, maybe November first, and total cut off date December 31st. This gives us two months of cutting down, and maybe even before the total cut off date, we might just quit! Who knows. Anything is possible with the Lord. All I know I REALLY REALLY want to quit. And your idea sounds great! And remember it is okay to fail, if one of us fails the other one will lift that person up, and if both fail at same time, the Lord will lift us up. It is normal to be anxious and afraid. But remember this is a goal we have to reach, but at the same time, we've got to be remember that the Lord will guide us through this and we will make it. The Lord has enough faith in us, but do we have enough faith in outselves? We can do this, I know we can and with the Lord guiding, we will DO this!

I'll pray for you guys.

I quit over a year ago. I had to quit cold turkey because of a kidney problem. Occassionally on a night watch when I'm having a hard time keeping y eyes open, I'll bum one from a co-worker, but I don't want them anymore.

It's good practice, once you quit, or cut down, or whatever you do, to brush your teeth after each smoke. When you do that you don't want to get rid of that clean feelig in your mouth.

I guess, what keeps me from starting up again, since my kindney's better is just the fact that I got tired of stinking and waking up in the morning with that nasty ciggarette taste in my mouth.
