• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi All! I am fairly new to this site and had recently posted a thread in the asthma and breathing section, and i wanted to share my story with all of you.

I was diagonsed with asthma about 6 years ago, and of course told that smoking was the cause. I started smoking when i was 16 and i am now 29. I recently started having serious asthma issues and just today my husband had to take me to the emergency room. They did all sorts of tests and poking and proding and when they looked at my chest x-ray basically told me that i have the lungs and the heart of a 40 year old. That was a real wake up call for me. They wanted to keep me overnight but because of not having insurance i turned them down. When i got home i was sitting her thinking "Gosh it sure would be nice to go out and smoke a cigarette" so what did i do? I went out and smoked and as i was smoking i thought about the doctors words of having the lungs of a 40 year old and almost got sick. I immediately came in took my cigarettes and broke all of them and threw them in the garbage. I know that i have a long struggle ahead of me but all i could think about was if i dont quit now I'm going to die and miss out on all the things in life that are wonderful, as well as leaving my husband and family to suffer for my stupidity.

I know that i am rambling but i URGE those of you who are trying to quit to do it before you end up like me 29 and on the verge of losing everything i have worked so hard to get.
If anyone is interested in being a support buddy or is looking for one please PM me and we can keep each other busy so we wont give into the urge to smoke.
Thanks for listening and God Bless!

Hey, firefly.

I am so sorry to hear about your trouble. I feel for you and the pain that you are going through and the task ahead of you. I quit so many times it isn't funny. This website helped me a lot so you have come to the right place. I will be praying for you and hoping that you find comfort in all of this. It is a hard decision but remember - if you fall, just pick yourself back up again. We have been there and done that. Also the best years are to come so don't focus on the past but on the glorious smoke-free future. If you need some support or an opportunity to rant/confess/chat please PM.

Blessings, Evie

As your big brother, I know your story all too well. In fact, it's making me want to smoke. ( Just kidding.)

Just think though, if you quit, only three more of us will have to quit in order to be a smoke free family!

You have great reasons to quit and I'm pulling for you. I'll even go somewhere else to smoke when you visit!

Good for you in quitting. You can do it! I realized that my blood pressure was high and I could have a heart attack or a stroke. I was chain smoking and out of control and knew it. It feels good to not smoke now. My cough is still here and I'm hoping it will go away. Feel free to pm me if you like.
