• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Unfortunately, there is no "best". It's going to depend on what's most comfortable for you and your baby.

Having said that, my favorite sling in the whole world was a MayaWrap. :) I had used an Over the Shoulder Baby Holder (which has padding) and it was so bulky and uncomfortable... Then I tried the MayaWrap, which I had originally not gotten because I was afraid it would be uncomfortable because it's Not padded... but it turned out to be Extremely comfortable for me. Plus, I love the fabrics (which don't scream "baby") and since the fabric is woven, it's breathable~ which is a Huge plus for me here in the desert heat. :)

MayaWrap site: http://www.mayawrap.com/ I think I actually bought mine from one of their distributors' sites (listed somewhere on their site) because that particular distributor either had some on sale or was offering free shipping at the time (can't remember which now~ it's been 7 yrs! lol)

I was told wrapping the baby up real tight in a receiving blanket(I know there is a term for it) before putting them in the sling helps support their pelvis.

A lady at church uses a sling like these and this is the one DH and I plan on getting. We like it because it's not sized so he or I can use it. I carried around her youngest and liked how it went easily from her(she's bigger than me normally but also 5 months along) to me and no complicated rings, straps etc

http://www.mamaroobabysling.com/newsite/BabySling.html

She's has 4 children, pregnant with number 5 but she buys from a reservation, who makes them out west.

It depends on what you are looking for. I think you'll just need to do some looking around.

A regular Maya wrap has a ring, and there are lots of ring slings out there... it tends to have more fabric, and some people don't like that look. But ring slings are adjustable so that helps. They also make a Maya Pouch (http://www.mayawrap.com/p_mwpouch.php) which is adjustable within reason, but far less fabric.

Then there are types that are not adjustable like a hot sling http://www.hotsling.com but if its just you wearing it, that might not be a problem.

If you want a sling that you wear and put baby either in front or in back of you, you could try http://meitaibaby.com/ or an Ergo baby carrier. http://www.ergobabycarrier.com/

As you can tell, I've been shopping a bit myself. ;) I also have some online buddies who make ring slings, so if you want one of those they make them cheaper than Maya brand :)

Have fun...

I loved my MayaWrap, I got it when my DD was 2 and carried her in it til she was 4, she was very high needs. I also used one with my God daughter from the time she was born. I love them and if blessed with another baby will get one and use it form the get go. For low muscle tone I would suggest checking out a Moby Wrap.

I second the Maya ring sling recommendation. I have a homemade one (there are instructions on that site) and it has been absolutely indispensible to me. You can nurse in it, baby can nap in it, it's comfortable, adjustable, easy to make if you can sew at all (and I can't, but I think even I could make one of these!)...really great.

Now that my baby is bigger, we still use the ring sling some but more often are into the mei tai (I got mine from www.meitaicarrier.com but there are a lot of people making them and patterns online for free). I like the mei tai because the baby's weight is distributed more evenly across your back and shoulders than with the Snugli and a lot of other "pack" style carriers. You can nurse in it, too. It's great.

This is the one I have:
http://kangarookorner.com/

I have a Kangaroo Korner Adjustable Fleece Pouch . I love it personally. I had a snuggli and my daughters legs turned blue after being in it a while. This sling is wonderful. She's 21 months and I can carry her COMFORTABLY for both of us still in this sling. You can use it in many different positions too. LOVE IT!

I whole heartedly second that-- I also have a cotton one, and a Solarveil pouch from there.

I have worn all four of mine--and have literally used nearly every sling type out there...and this is by far the most comfortable and easy to use.

Which slings would you people in the know recommend for someone who gets very sore neck and shoulder muscles? I had a couple different front pack carriers when my daughter was a baby and I could only use them for a short time as I would get really bad pain in my shoulders and neck.

I used the maya wrap. I have nerve damage in my back, from tearing a muscle in summer 2002, in February 2003 was when I got my maya wrap and DD was 2 years old, I used it for two years and never had a problem, no neck pain, no back pain no nothing.

I would reiterate the KangarooKorner (fleece is best) pouches. They hold the baby up close to you and prevent straining...

I did not like my Maya wrap as much as I like these pouches.

Is the fleece warm? The reason I ask is because we live in south Texas and it will be 120 degrees when the baby is born so we would need something that would keep the baby as cool as possible.

Fleece is definietly not what you want in warm weather. I personally don't like fleece, it stretches too much for me, Every sling user has a favorite. So you just have to get some ideas, take a look at them and see which ones appeal to your eye, then try it out.

Did anyone who uses a Maya wrap find it hard to adjust at first? I have one but didn't have good luck with it. I will try it again with our next baby...maybe if I can find someone to help me figure the thing out, it won't be so bad. But I also plan on getting a Peanut Shell:

Our favorite carrier that we do have is a Mei Tai called the Kozy Carrier:

Your chiropractor can help with that.

I would suggest getting a baby doll, one as close to newborn size as you can find and then just practice. Also remember that your baby will clue you in, they may look uncomfortable in the sling (especially if they are all balled up) but if they go to sleep they are comfortable/
