• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have been going to sleep most of the day. I just don't want to face the reality of my life and am depressed, too. Some things are going on that are very hard for me to face so I sleep and sleep. Sometimes I can't get up and sleep even more. I guess I am venting. Does anyone else do this?

Hi Ruth,

I do that too. But are you staying awake in the night, and sleeping in the day, or sleeping most of the night and all day too? I guess you know sleeping in the day is a symptom of depression. It's like we have nothing to do in the day so we'd rather sleep.

I don't know your story, but I've seen several posts by you. One of my biggest problems is I've out lived the small family I had. So I'm all alone. If you want to write me a private message feel free to do so. Maybe we can help each other. Actually I spent most of my life helping others. It helps me to help someone else. So I hope you write me.

In my experience, sleep begets more sleep--meaning, the more I sleep, the more I sleep! Sleeping to much is not only a sign of depression, but also a CAuse of depression, as your brain gets too much REM sleep, which is not good.

I know, I know-not helpful. I had to use more stimulants like caffeine and exercise and better diet to break the cycle. But the most important thing was light--natural light or light from a lightbox. Crazy as it sounds, that is the most important thing for me.
I wonder what your thing is/things are, Ruth . . . have you ever been diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder--I mean, it could be anything, or multiple things that could lead you to a more waking life, but a few brisk walks and some intense light always get me going when I implement them daily.

Thank you for your feedback MadamImAdaminChrist. I know all you say is so true. I have PTSD and major depression and bipolar and OCD. I'm on medications but they only help so much. Yes, sleeping a lot makes you more depresed and then being depressed you want to sleep more. I've just made a pot of coffee. Going to take the dog for a walk. I have a bad knee that acts up when I walk a lot but I'm still going to try and walk a little farther each day. I'm going to open up the blinds and let the sun shine in.

I too sleep a lot, it helps time pass. Some of us are more unlucky then others in this world, it's just the sad reality. I think it is good that we can sleep and make time pass, and every once in a while God blesses us with a day or two that we feel good and excited, but in the end he can only do so much to help us while we are here. But it is a great comfort to me that this wont happen forever and one day we will die and live the life we always dreamed of.

Mirkir, One of my #1 questions for God is why some of us are born with luck, as you said, and some of us aren't. We do have to try and help ourselves, I know that. But some folks seem to be able to get what they want, with minimal effort, and some of us can't get these things no matter what we do. I've been observing this all my life, trying to figure out why, and I just don't know. So at my age I'm all but sure I can't have what most folks call "a life". So why not sleep. I just wish I could sleep at night, rather than all day.

When I'm in my depressed cycle I sleep a lot too, but when I'm in my high cycle then I don't sleep much at all.

I think sleeping when we are depressed is a blessing in disguise because when we sleep we get a break from the depression.

Hoping and praying that the depression lessens somewhat Ruth:hug:

Thank you Jeshu. I can't even sleep unless I take medication and then sometimes that doesn't even work. Other times I feel like sleeping the day away. It seems like I'm in a better place when I dream unless I have a nightmare, of course.

I used to do that. What I found helped was to write a note and put it somewhere I would see it like on the fridge door. The note had three things listed
1. use deodorant
2. take medication
3. get outside

While I didn't tend to eat breakfast I would at least look in the fridge before deciding I couldn't be bothered eating. I would at least go outside though. Sunshine helps and I found my day was better. Things were still tough and it wasn't a magic cure but it helped.

I sleep when I'm depressed too. Once I get up I have all kinds of things to do that I don't want to do, so why bother. I've found however, that doing just what I don't feel like doing makes me feel better, while if I just keep doing what I want to do (sleep) I stay depressed.

Dogs help with that; either you take them out (which you don't feel like doing) or you clean up after them (which you really don't feel like doing)! In either case they are a great motivation.

Praying for you and God Bless.

I have done this most of my adult life....sometimes I have literally gotten so scared of life and people that it's hard to physically move! I have had panic feelings as well as being so depressed that i don't want anyone to have to see my downed mood! and then there is the other issue that I have slept during the day so i won't overeat. I have accomplished little in life mostly because of my depression robbing me of living life normally and doing things the typical person just does and takes for granted! My heart goes out to you Ruth:hug: and just know you aren't alone with this either:)

Thank you all for your thoughts and support. I am sleeping more than ever now and it's during the day mostly. There are so many things I don't get done. I have so much laundry to do and I just don't do it. I will have to one of these days when I have no clothes to wear! lol. I'm getting to that point.
