Well Open Wounds is predominantly about John's relationship with his father, which is anything but peachy.

Albeit it's not 100% about God, but not all Christian bands we listen to have 100% nothing but songs about God.

Skillet's ministry is being amplified to a new audience by signing onto Lava. Why are we complaining & who are we to complain?

personally, i hate songs where people just complain about their family life, and it seems to be the dominant theme in mainstream rock (Korn, puddle of mudd, etc...). I will have to hear the song myself, but I hope its a song from the heart, not an instance of "well, we are mainstream so we have to sing a song talking about our bad family life." i'm not judging the song, i am just hoping its not another "whining song"

In the dark with the music on
Wishing I was somewhere else
Taking all your anger out on me (somebody help)
I would rather rot alone than spend a minute with you
I'm gone, I'm gone

And you can't stop me from falling apart.
'Cause my self-destruction is all your fault.
How could you? How could you?
How could you hate me?
When all I ever wanted to be was you.
How could you? How could you?
How could you love me?
When all you ever gave me were open wounds.
Open wounds.

Downstairs the enemy sleeps leaving the TV on
Watching all the dreams we had turn into static
Doesn't matter what I do, nothing's gonna change
I'm never good enough.

And you can't stop me from falling apart.
'Cause my self-destruction is all your fault.
How could you? How could you?
How could you hate me?
When all I ever wanted to be was you.
How could you? How could you?
How could you love me?
When all you ever gave me were open wounds.

Tell me why you broke me down,
And betrayed my trust in you?
I'm not giving up, giving in.
When will this war end?
When will it end?

You can't stop me from falling apart.
You can't stop me from falling apart.
You can't stop me from falling apart.
'Cause my self-destruction is all your fault.
How could you? How could you?
How could you hate me?
When all I ever wanted to be was you.
How could you? How could you?
How could you love me?
When all you ever gave me were open wounds.

How could you? How could you?
How could you? How could you?
All I ever wanted to be was you.
All you ever gave me were open wounds.
It's about John's relationship with his Father.
The song is quite beautiful and sad in the context that it's in.

Having been raised with a not-so-great father myself the song helps me see that I'm not the only one out there who gets that angry at their Dad. Other than that I don't like the song as mush as the other ones on the CD. I really, really like Imperfection. I think that's my favorite one on there so far.

I can't believe you guys what your saying about Skillet! Skillet is a Christian band to the core! I just went to Yc 2004 in edmonton, alberta, and Skillet was playing their concerts and this new song "Open Wounds" was played. An absolutely amazing song. John Cooper explained that he had difficult times with his father when he was young and he was not a Christian at the time. He said he left the house and didn't talk to his father for a while. Anyways in the end John and his father patched up the stuff and he led his father to Christ which I think is an amazing story. This song is not dark at all and I believe it gives hope to those teens who do fight with their parents.

Hey Skillet Rules!
God Bless!

I like SKillet and although this sounds like it may be one of those I'm really angry and here I whine songs I doubt that Skillet would go down that road. I'll have to really hear it to see though. Currently they are my favorite band
"I'm really angry and here I whine songs" are hecka cool.I mean there's nothin wrong with venting anger in a song. usualy the added emotion makes the the songs that much more enjoyable.

Music is all about emotion. It's an intensly creative way to articulate emotions. Who are we to tell someone they can't articualte an emotion they have had? We might as well go the whole route and tell them they can't feel those emotions in the first place. Lets all be stoic then we'll be happy...

Granted, that's probably not the intent of the original posts but that's what I get out of people saying they dislike music because it's angry.

Even then, from the clip I listened to, it wasn't anger but lament at not getting the relationship with his father he wanted.

The problem with the song "Open Wounds" is not the fact that it's about what the lead singer went thru with his father as a kid, but the fact that as Christians we're not called to walk in "open wounds" and he never sites God as a healer of that. I love Skillet, but i don't know a whole lot of the members backgrounds and until i read on here that the lead singer had recieved healing from those wounds and lead his father to Christ, i just assummed he still harbored that anger and pain, which is unacceptable when u're releasing a CD to a secular crowed cuz they're not gonna know about his background either. I really feel this song is just a case of deception cuz, I'm sorry, but can releate to unsaved people AND still site God as the solution w/out sounding lame.
In the end, i think we all need to pray for Skillet that they don't enter into deception as the meld into the secular industry.

i just saw skillet last night at a concert (and got their autographs) and before the played open wounds they explained what it was about. The first part "how could you hate me" he was talking to his dad about his past experiance with him then the second part is "how could you love me" he's talking to his real father in heaven (God) I wouldn't judge the song till u know what it's about

i understand what they mean.. it is not a worship or exaltation song...
Sometimes when memmories so strong are left for years, musicians come back and deal with it making a song. Eg good charlotte. I whole heartedly agree it is angry, and perhaps a little abrasive, but remembering that artists often use their music to express, i love this song.
