  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has anyone read the Geneva bible? Are they still around?

You can order one here: http://www.monergismbooks.com/Hardback-Geneva-Bible-1599-edition-p-16655.html for about 40 bucks or so.

I personally don't like it - but only because of the old english - for me it's just a cool thing to have because of its reformed notes from Calvin and others.

I'm not too keen on the KJV either. For some reason I just have a hard time reading the old english in either version. As much as I respect the historical roots of both versions I prefer reading the modern versions. I'm partial to the ESV.

I'm going to take a crack at reading the Geneva 1599 version all the way through pretty soon. So far I've only read Romans and Acts out of that version....

There is a version of the Geneva Bible with updated spelling (modern English) where they did not alter the words other than modern spelling. If I can find a link, I will post it.

Isa 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I [am] God, and [there is] none else.

Yes, the elect in the nations, not Just in palestine..isa 45:

15Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.
16They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them: they shall go to confusion together that are makers of idols.
17But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end.

This israel is the whole world of the elect..

Ro 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
So you believe the effective call is "the other way". But Paul also says -- "those He called, He justified." "with the heart one believes and is justified" -- right?

So "those He called" "with the heart one believes and is justified"

'For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."'

I know that many non-Calvinists criticize double predestination as unduly harsh, while many Calvinists lump single predestination in with universalism as unscriptural, but there IS Scriptural support for single predestination! You see, the Bible does indeed say that God predestines and promises believers eternal life while threatening non-believers with hell. But it doesn't explicitly say that non-believers are predestined to hell. Also, it is a theological Truth as has been shown over and over against throughout Biblical history that while God ALWAYS fulfill His promises, God SOMETIMES does not carry out His threats!

In a general sense, I agree....
