• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Oktoberfest... I would think it's celebrated in the Amana Colonies.

Arn't they mostly Amish, Pennsylvania Dutch oriented? German to I guess. Most of the Amish/Menonites around here come from that stock. Don't know if they celebrate anything except potlucks like us. :)

I don't know that they're Amish. If I make it back, I'll see if they have phones in their shops. ;)

I want to know how the Oktoberfest went..

I guess if you ask the questions, someone might answer them.. you may want to start another topic.

The 'fest is an "all" October event that is every weekend in Oct. Don't know what happend on the other weekend but this one was beautifull with sunny skies and mild 60's temps. It's a town on the Missouri river that is part of a loose community of german settlements that are on both sides of the river for 50 miles or so. Back in the 1800's when the german immagrants moved to this area it reminded them of their homeland and they stayed. Hilly river towns with wineries and breweries and lots of German Gemütlichkeit with a lot of old world charm. Polkas and german bands floating in air puntuated by people "inbibing in their favorite repast", as WC Fields would put it, with lots of ribauld laughter. With dancing/drinking halls like HermanHoff. All the side streets have small businesses catering to tourists and architecture reminding us of quaint villages. Small theatrical events and german eating establishment and lots of "spirits". Wineries grow their own grapes for wine and breweries brew their own beer.

All in all it's a great time!

Couldn't make it today because of "little guy" but we went last year, and it was everything you described.

Today, I got delivered a Le Cruset dutch oven that I bought just so I can make sauerbraten. I'll probably start marinating the roast on Wednesday, for dinner on Sunday. Does anyone know where I can find some good Speculatius?

I'm not very creative---just a meaty pork bones, red beans, garlic (naturally),onion and ginger in the pressure cooker. I use ginger and garlic on many pork items. On an oven roast it is delicious. YUM!

If I ever decide to get serious about cooking (probably will this winter--helps heat the house) I would like to dive into my mom's cookbook and try all the old recipes. The Settlement Cookbook was the brainchild of some russian/german ladies back in the 1890's that wanted to preserve their cooking heritage for their relatives and it was printed for some 50 years till WWII. It was out of print for some 20 years and there was such demand for it to return that it was again printed for another 20 some years. This is were I get my healthy appetite :) The first one's to come out had measurments like "pinch of this, dash of that" and "flavor to suit taste". Works for a guy that loves garlic and onions :p

A part of Jonathan Rundman's song "The Glasses Song" was used on the Ellen DeGeneres show the other day. That was cool. I got way too excited (as I always do).

St. Paul's congregation is currently worshipping with a local Episcopal congregation and I helped with their youth today. . .they made cookies. . .and I didn't burn the nachos or the cookies! Their youth minister did burn a batch of nachos! LOL

one burns nachos by leaving them in the over for too long (and she said it's not the first time that she's burned them, either). I also made sure they didn't burn the cookies - and especially the last batch they made, since they forgot that they were in the oven!

I still have my avatar and signature, so I don't know. . .and I see others have theirs. . I see your avatar, but not your sig. I see a red x - and usually that just means it can't be found by whatever server it's on. . .

Aww... cute!

My best friend got engaged last night... she's getting married in Scotland next fall. I hope Chris and I can go! 'Cause I don't want to go without him to somewhere cool like that. Anyway, flights that time of year are actually pretty cheap to go to Europe, and if we did go we'd make a week-long vacation of it, sort of a honeymoon kinda (since we haven't had one yet). Then, three weeks after her wedding, she's having a reception in Vancouver... that's another $800 in airfare although we could drive and I'd only have to take one day off of work (long weekend).
