so, since this seems to be the place for random and non-topical posts, i have a few for y'all

my niece turns 1 on june 30th! i'm uber excited!

ultimate frisbee tournament this weekend in brookings! i'm so stoked, i've hardly played since the tourney last year. frisbee became a close second to soccer for me

speaking of soccer, the world cup in germany starts tomorrow! the first game for the US will be on the 12th against the czech republic. i'll probably be posting a lot over the next month since i'll rarely leave my sofa when i'm not working so i can watch my month of endless soccer

I've only read the one by Marius and I picked this one up today (on sale at a going out of business sale)...

Marius?! Blech. It's like a blend of Erik Erickson and Hillaire Belloc. If you want Luther psychoanalyzed, just go read Erickson. The better "early biography" of Luther is Heiko Oberman's Luther: man Between God and the Devil.

Bainton's Here I Stand is good, and very personal, but lacks broad historical context. Kittelson's Luther the Reformer is not for the scholarly audience.

But really, just spend the money and invest in Martin Brecht's 3 volume bio. It's the only one you need.

I found an old book by Hanns Lilje titled "Luther Now". It's been in storage for some 40+ years. Anybody ever read it?

Duh-- I forgot he was one of the dissenters against Hitler. Shoud be a very interestiong read then.

Yeah. The Marius biography was definitely a psychoanalysis of Luther and his supposed fear of death (in Marius' head)... I felt about the same for Marius as I felt for Crossan in his Historical Jesus...

A long book with some nifty writing skills but full of hot air...

Yikes! I just got 10 inches cut off my hair (and donated it to Locks of Love)!!! What a weird feeling to look in the mirror now LOL

I'm scared to do that...I could easily donate 12 inches and still have plenty left, but I like my hair long.

I've had my hair all different lengths (and different colors almost!LOL). 10 years ago my hair was to my bottom but having a toddler around changed my mind. Now that she is older, I specially grew my hair to donate to Locks of Love. Now it's below my ears but not touching my shoulders. It's been a few years since I've had it short. It grows back super fast though, so I'm not worried at all.

Do you use your long hair as a security blanket? I did that for such a long time and really hid behind it...I guess I wanted to disappear.

I did for a long time...now I leave it because everyone compliments me on it, and I really do like it longer. I've had it cut shoulder-length several times, and always regretted it. It grows fast though - 4 years from shoulder to waist.

In fact, I had an old babushka on the Kyiv metro order me never to cut it once. It was on New Year's Eve, and I had braided a red ribbon into it.

Do you drive? I hated getting my hair caught in the door! OUCH!! That and the stupid seatbelt when it would retract would pull my hair out.

The stupid seatbelt catches my hair all the time. It drives me nuts. As for the driving, I have a learner's permit, but am too lazy to learn. I got the permit because I needed an official ID to travel.
