  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Since we seem to have settled the matter, not long after being welcomed into the Catholic Church, I wanted to give my priest a token of gratitude for teaching with me once a week for so many months. So I texted him, asking if buying him dinner at Outback would be considered simony under the circumstances. He replied that it would not be. So I bought him dinner.

I've done smarter things. Outback has REALLY gone downhill since the last time I'd eaten there. But I was hankering for some baked potato soup, what can I say? Father seemed to rather enjoy the meal though. So I guess there's that.

And at least it wasn't simony.

Simony aside... as an Australian when I lived over in Silicon Valley working for one of the large relational database companies for a couple of years I was told about this place called Outback with its blooming onions which are about as Australian as the Eifel Tower I went there for a meal - the steaks were ok but what Australian would ever bother buying a Fosters lager (horrible stuff). My favourite restaurant while in the USA was Cheevy's especially the fajitas at the restaurant in Redwood City which obviously catered to the Latin community that lived around it. What surprised me though in that area was that loin lamb chops were very hard to come by.
