  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Silly question

Hey Sweetie!
That's not a silly question. They kind of let you know by crying their hungry cry and rooting more often. Maggie just hit a growth spurt and jumped from 4-6 oz. per feeding (every 3-4 hours). I knew she needed more because she just cried her hungry cry and bobbed her head around a few minutes after her bottle was finished. She's not a very tricky baby though; she's got a pretty structured life (sleep, eat, look around time, and sleep again).

Abel eats approx. every 2 hrs, but takes a 3 hr nap in the afternoon and then sleeps for 7 hrs at night. He takes 5 oz (breastmilk/formula mix) at each feeding, but sometimes leaves up to 1.5 oz in the bottle. I'm just going by his cues...

When my boys were babies basically what we did was to start out with 4 oz per feeding...then when we noticed that they were still fussy even after a feeding we upped it to 6 oz per feeding...now for my boys that was around 2-3 months old. Then at around 4-5 months old they went up again to 6-8 oz per feeding depending on the time of day (they tended to eat more just after waking in the am, just after his afternoon nap, and just before bed at night) Then at around 6 months they were solidly eating 8 oz per bottle feeding (but they were also eating cereals, and baby foods at this point as well). I would mention however that my boys were bigger babies and therefore tended to eat more than the average baby. My youngest was over 9 pounds when he was born.

I think it's better to just go by the baby's cues... If she's hungry, feed her. If she pushes the nipple out of her mouth, she's done. ;)

Not all babies push out the nipple. Neither of my kiddo's did. They would eat and eat and eat and then it would all come back up so I needed some sort of guide :)

My husband said something last night that I think has some truth to it.
When we eat it takes a little while for us to feel full after a feed. I think it is the same for babies (well at least for Maddie). She eats 180mls each sitting, but i know she would eat more, if i gave her 280 mls she would eat that. After she has finished the 180mls I give her her dummy, she is still wanting to suck and still feels hungry. After about 10 mins she is the happiest little thing! She's not hungry anymore. She just hasn't realised it yet!

One reason I asked is because the pediatrician said like 3 oz if she sleeps 3 hrs and 4 oz for 4 hrs.

I have never heard this before. That means you are to feed baby 24 ounces each day, regardless of size and age? I agree with listening to your baby.

This is closer to what we do. During the day I do not let baby go longer than 3 hours until he/she is sleeping through the night. I mean what use is it of me if baby goes 4 hours in the middle of the day? If he/she wants to sleep, let it be at night I say! ;)

When baby finishes the bottle at any time then I start questioning whether it is time to start making more. If your baby is finishing the bottle then there is the possibility that they would have chosen to eat more if it was presented.

Grace would eat a ton too if I let her. She gained a 1lb in the first week. The pediatrician just said to be careful. And I read somewhere overfeeding causes upset stomachs.

I think now that she is older you could give her another try at demand feeding and let her decide how much she wants to eat. I only try to keep it no more than 3 hours apart during the day (sooner if they want it) until baby sleeps at night. A mom of 10 told me to do this, and she breastfeeds, so it applies both ways.

She does go 3 hrs in between feedings. Sometimes the problem is she will go to sleep right when it's time to feed and I let her go say 3 1/2 hrs. Speaking of gotta run feed her!!

Oh, do you wake them up if they go longer than 3 hrs? I was told by a friend to let them sleep and kinda get their own schedule??
