They may not of belonged to an organized religion but I can think of several groups that would line up with these beliefs, I have had words with them and they know where I stand on that.

So I guess the question is, does God cause sickness based on spiritual standing or is it just part of his plan or is it just a matter of physical circumstance? How should people respond to these kind of situations?

I've wondered this too based on a story I saw on tv about the child of an unwed, non-christian mother developed tumors and died.

I think of Job and David. Spiritually-speaking, children are under their parents. David and Bath Sheba's first son died. All of Job's children were killed when God allowed the devil to test him.

I think there are some things going on in the Spiritual world that we might not understand until we get there.

Would it be an effective test though? I mean, she had a perfectly preventable death according to the doctors they simply refused treatment and then pass it off as their own spiritual test...I can't imagine why you would inflict that on your children, especially when we will all be tested at some point regardless.

Certainly some sects regard illness as punishment for sin. Some regard wealth as a reward for being good. That's not my theology and I don't care to argue it much.

People have a right to their own beliefs. But those rights face limitations when children are endangered. I'm very much in favor of removal of children and prosecution of parents in such situations - in the interest of full disclosure I have been a participant on the official side of both things professionally and support it. There have been times I've advocated removing children who weren't or not removing those who were, but that's part of my job.

I went to school with a girl who wasn't allowed to lie down in the nurse's office if she felt ill due to religious beliefs.

This country is so welcoming of mercy killings (turning a blind eye) and head scarves and foot baths and call to prayers but when it comes to beliefs of people who call themselves Christian, there's a double standard.

god gives your child a sickness... the test of faith is not a test of do you have faith in god to heal your child through prayers... but do you have faith that god will send a doctor, given the power and desire to heal by god's grace, only to be turned away by a fool

reminds me of a joke i once heard

a man is stuck on the 2nd floor of his house... its flooding, he calls out "god save me" just then a boat pulls up the man declines help saying "god will save me" the water rises, the man is on the roof, another boat arrives and again the man turns them away saying "god will save me" just as the water is up to the mans chin a helicopter arrives and the man says "god will save me", the man drowns. when he gets to heaven he says "god, why did you not save me" and god replies "i sent 2 boats and a helicopter... what more do you want!?"

notice how people blame god and asks why your house burned down (you left a chip pan on!) or your car is destroyed (you parked in a bad place). but few people thank god when something good happens when a doctor saves your child from disease. it is gods gift of that doctors intelligence and desire that saved them... not an evil doctor who has shunned god... one who allows god to work through him.

sometimes god works in mysterious ways... sometimes he works through the tylenol in your office draw just as a headache begins....
