Christian Worship, ah, yes the hymnal that departed from a translation and got creative instead to say and "and became fully human" instead of "and was made man."

One who knew their greek (and I do on some accounts) knows that the point of the greek was the full humanity of God, not his gender.

This is the same thing the LCMS considered for the LSB. There was an inclination bysome on the Commission on Worship to change the word "man" in the Nicene Creed to "humans." It was overwhelmingly rejected, not because of anything to do with the Greek, but because of the reason given for the change, that being to make the Creed "politically correct." Nonsense.

LBW solved that by omitting the word altogether, which lends the Creed to supporting Reformed theology. The LCMS kept the traditional wording of the Creed.
I just wish they had used the original word "catholic" instead of retaining "Christian", as the COW had also proposed.

For the WELS, it was a matter of combating the idea that Jesus wasn't truly human.

And of course, you've already heard my discourse on the word catholic, even the lower case one. Although I do understand that it means universal.

I didn't realize that was such a battle in the WELS. Were their many who believed Jesus wasn't fully human that it required changing the creed?

That's what the pastor's class after church is about. He explains the how and why of church doctrine, church history and important lessons from the Bible. Our pastor really likes to keep it interesting too, if just to keep us awake and thinking.

Oh, I didn't mean the argument was contained in the WELS. Sorry about that.

It was in answer to other areas claiming that Jesus wasn't fully human. Other faiths, as it were. WELS has always agreed that Jesus was fully human.

Yeah, true, but you can't do that at every service. And even still, if a pastor is able to pontificate on the meaning, there are still some people that won't get it, and will leave thinking we are Roman Catholic still.

You can do it at every service. If you print worship folders, then put an asterisk after catholic and then put "catholic = universal" and perhaps a small blurb about the historical context of the word.

It's what my church does and you'd be surprised how many actually do read it and comment "I never knew that".

Not a bad idea.

Our pastor will sometimes work it in at different times. Like just before communion if there are alot of visitors. He might say something about closed communion and of the catholic - which is an old word for universal... etc. Something to that effect. I don't recall exactly what he says anymore.
