Day laborers and those working under free contracts (such as Jacobs three seven-year contracts with Laban) were not slaves.

This makes the comparison with working for a salary even weirder. The bible clearly makes the distinction between slaves, indentured servants and day laborers in several of the texts that talk about slaves.
