Should I wait?

I know for a fact that my boyfriend plans to propose to me sometime soon, as he bought me an engagement ring about 2 weeks ago. I am so tempted to begin looking for ideas and at dresses, invitations, flowers, and so forth (especially online) right now. However, I wonder if it would be the best and more "proper" thing to wait until we are officially engaged. What do you think?

If you're not timing your actual wedding to the time you get engaged (meaning - if you're engaged in the winter that you'll marry in the spring/summer, or if you're engaged in the spring you'll marry in the autumn) - I'd say sure...start looking around now.

The only stuff that really factors in to planning is the weather, IMHO...and even then...if you choose to have an indoor wedding it's not as big of a deal.

It's better to wait. The planning is fun. But just remember, there is a season for everything. One of my friends started planning before her husband proposed and she gave me that advice because she wished she had waited to start planning.

I'd wait, too...so he can start looking around at things with you. Otherwise he might feel left behind.

I see no problem in looking around. You never know when you will find a great deal on something. You need to wait until you are engaged to purchase anything major. You need to discuss details such as floors with your fiance. I had my wedding rings picked out before I even had a boyfriend lol. God gave me the perfect husband, and those rings!

You can look, but don't get attached to anything in particular. This is his wedding too and it would be bad for you to get attached to something he doesn't want or hates.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I mentioned it casually last night over the phone, and he seemed to err on the side of preferring I wait. Only thing I may casually look at is wedding gowns online.

And looking back now...that is the right thing to do.

this is a particularly special time in your life...relish every moment. All of the different pieces and parts are special to you two. Enjoy and make the most of every little fragment...together. And where he is a guy and will have to probably be drug unwillingly along to do some of the things...That part is special too. Enjoy it all.

Lol, yeah, I won't really look at anything until the actual proposal. We also agreed to take at LEAST a week of just enjoying the moment, the bliss, etc., before diving into planning. He thinks that's just fine. And I know for sure he's bought it. He talks way too much about it, proposing, a wedding, everything. From something he said the other night, I figured out he would like for the date to be a lot earlier than what I was thinking, but I think it's gonna have to be a bit later on into the year. Anyway, his attitude about this is so sweet and heartwarming! Makes me feel GREAT!

I was one of those brides who already had a whole lot of ideas before I was even engaged. Definitely hold off on planning anything, but a girl can dream about her wedding day any time.

I totally started looking at stuff before we got officially engaged because DH (then my boyfriend) had expressed that he wasn't all that interested in the wedding planning process and just wanted me to be happy

I'm all for looking but not doing any serious planning Maybe making a board on Pinterest or something?

I think it's fine to just "look" at stuff, just for fun ideas. I know I was so spastically excited before my hubby even proposed, I was looking at all kinds of things, from rings to dresses to venues to honeymoon ideas. I couldn't help it!

But don't start picking things out or making plans without him Unless he's a "hands off" kind of groom (and lots of guys are). If he seems like he wants to be involved in the planning process, let him!

Thanks for the advice everyone. All I've really done is make a Secret Board on Pinterest and look at some wedding gowns online. There's no need to do anything else right now really! Plus I'd love for him to be involved with the planning

Well I would hope that you would chose your own wedding gown, because if you are marrying the traditional way, he really shouldn't see it until the wedding day.

As for the planning, do you know when you will marry, or how large the wedding will be? One of my friends had a daughter married this weekend, and it has been extremely stressful. The daughter has long since left home, so she wasn't marrying from home, but still my friend had a lot of work to do to arrange all of the peripherals, and this was for a wedding of only about 100 people. She was so stressed last week that she burst into tears - and bear in mind, this is the MOM, lol. I can't imagine how stressed her dd was (either that or she was just taking it easy while mom did it all!) So, at least have some ideas going - venue, how large a wedding, what kind of reception, etc etc. There are a LOT of aspects to modern weddings, and it takes time to plan.
