Should I do it?

Hello fellow people,

I'm in need of some advice for those of you who care enough. Since I was a little girl I've wanted to move to Texas, I've never visited there but I've heard great things about it. I currently live in Cali. I don't like it here, it's super crowded, crazy expensive, and the unemployment rate is NO JOKE. There is really nothing for me here. I never planned on staying here anyway, just felt a little held back because of my family. But I've decided I need to live my life for myself. As cliché as it may sound! I'm obviously planning a trip out there soon, before I make any plans. But, for you fellow Texans how is it there? How's the employment, weather, food, people, costs of living etc. And, what are some good neighborhoods to see? NO RUDE PEOPLE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

Greetings,
I lived in Texas for half of my childhood and into my adulthood. I think there are plenty of places that can fit your needs, whether it be a small town with nice people and land to live on, or a relatively medium sized town. I can't say exactly where to go, since I lived in a pretty big part of Texas. Others may be able to help you out with that.

I do, however, have a question regarding why you want to move to Texas. I understand you have certain reasons to want to go (eg. employment, weather, less-crowded), but in your explanation of wanting to move, I noticed you didn't include God in the picture. Have you sat down and asked God if this is what He wants you to do?

Just something to consider.

In peace

I am not trying to be rude, but California has less unemployment than Texas, although there is not a huge difference. Wages are considerably higher in California too. Here is an interesting comparison of the two states by a Texas publication. In the Texas vs. California rivalry, California is winning

I have visited TX a few times. My brother in law used to live in San Antonio, and I have been in Dallas and Brownsville.

Pretty nice place from what I have seen.

When you ask "Should I do it" I'm more concerned with why you would want to do it than where you are planning to go.

Texas may be the perfect fit for you, I don't know.

What are the "great things" you've heard about Texas? It would help if we knew exactly what it is you're looking for.

I never planned on staying here anyway, just felt a little held back because of my family. But I've decided I need to live my life for myself.

Is there someone in your family who is not letting you live your own life?

Who are you going to Texas with?

What's your profession or work you do? That will help with answering employment. The tech industry is booming in Austin, Energy in Dallas and Houston and there is always construction going on here. Also just about every small to mid sized city is expanding which provides opportunity for restaurants, stores, malls, retail etc. There's a lot here in Texas depending on where in this big Lone Star State you want to go.

If you like big cities then the cost of living is a bit higher but not much more. If you like rural we have that. If you like the coast we have a big one on the Gulf of Mexico.

I'm originally from NY but in 25 years of military service I spent most of it here in Texas and the Middle East. :)

Great place for Veterans so settled here as well after military retirement. Been around the state a lot minus the far west of the state which is quite nice from what I hear.

Again what type of jobs are you looking for? What type of environment? City, Coast, rural, in-between rural and City? Oh it gets real hot here in the summer. :)

Not a bad article but it is what the source The New Yorker left out. State incentives for tech industries see-saw and the article is from Summer 2017. But the real consideration is not only wages but take home pay. For middle to lower income families state income taxes in CA kills them. Then add in the state taxes just about everything you use. Texas has no state income tax and lower cost of living. So for middle income families and singles getting started on a career that means more take home pay even if wages are higher in CA.

I hear Texas folks are super friendly, cheaper way of living there (California prices are practically unbearable) and I just simple don't want to stay in California anymore. If it wasn't for my family and financial reasons I'd left a long time ago.

I completely agree with you. It's almost impossible to make a decent living in California.

Wasn't quite sure about what part of Texas, I've been looking into Dallas but I'm not sure. I'd like an in between city and rural, I want my space but also don't want to drive hours to find a Walmart or Target. I currently work at a call center here in Cali and it makes a decent paycheck but definelty not enough to get my own place which I'd love. I'm also currently enrolled in College.

I think you should go for it. Obviously be wise, save up as much money as you can, and hopefully find a job before you go if at all possible.

But like most places in the world, most of how you end up finding a place, depends on how much effort you put into it. No matter where you go, it can be worse, or better, depending on you.

That said, it would be hard to find a worse place than California. I've had numerous people who went out to the west coast from here in Ohio, and came right back. Apparently when the Hollywood media portrayal of California wears off, it's a really crappy state to live in.
