Should Christians stay away from games with magic in them?

I'll give the same answer to this as I gave when questions were raised about Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.... if these things cause you to stumble in your faith, then stay away from them. Though, as was already pointed out, if playing a game makes you want to ditch God and start trying to do spells then you need to question the strength of your faith in the first place... Personally, I see no harm in these games at all and I greatly enjoy them.

As a parent, I guess my greatest concern with RPG's was their addictive nature. Life is to be experienced firsthand, not through RPG's.

Yes, you must go out and become a ______ rather than entertaining yourself with video games and RPGs. Same with movies, actors are evil. Imagination is bad.

Thanks for the replies. I'm very strong in my faith and playing WoW has not effected it at all. Like one user said, as long as it doesn't make me want to go out and ditch God in order to perform the dark arts, it is ok. There is a verse in Romans that says that if a Brother says a food is unclean and refused to eat it, it is unclean to him and you shouldn't eat it in front of him. i think this applies to this situation. He, not God (I don't think) has declared that videogames with magic are unclean and I should therefore not speak about them to him.

Do you seriously not believe in demonic activity, Satanism, etc or are you just being sarcastic? Because the Bible is full of accounts of sorcery and witchcraft.

Show me; is actually a form of atheism; no.

Do you seriously believe people can fly on brooms then?

I believe if magic truly existed back then, it would still exist now. But it doesn't exist now, hence it didn't exist back then, by modus tollens.

If you wish to convince me otherwise, show me a person flying on a broom. If you can't, that speaks for itself. Either that, or you better have one heckuva convincing argument to explain why magic existed back then but doesn't now.

Well, seeing as how the LOTR had magic in it, Gandolf having used it and the fact that Tolkein was infact a christian, (it has been put forth that he was the one who infact evangelized the great C.S. Lewis so long ago) it's not an issue if a game or a fictional book has use of magic. They are not telling you to try it or try to rope you into some kind of cult. Tell your friend at work to lighten up or mind his own business.

Flying on brooms? We're not talking about cartoons. Read your Bible. Why would God warn against something that doesn't exist? Deuteronomy 18:10-11. How about Jannes and Jambres (2Ti 3:8/Exo 7:11), the witch of Endor (1Sam 28), Simon the sorcerer (Acts 8), Elymas the sorcerer (Acts 13), the little girl with a spirit of divination (Acts 16), etc, etc, etc. Do a simple Bible search, there are more than I can list. If you've ever read the Bible much at all, I can't imagine how you missed all of this.

If you're talking about real witches and brooms? Drugs, administered on the brooms and used in a sexual act which caused hallucinations of flying. Hey you asked.

See my sig.

Since you were unable to produce the heckuva convincing argument why magic existed back then but not now, I rest my case.

For crying out loud!!!!!

Ok I am sorry, but if I had a nickle for every time I posted this answer, I would be a billionare.

There is nothing wrong with magic in games, movies, and books. Magic isn't real. Maybe practcing magic in real life is bad for Christians. People have to realize that magic is fake, you can't perform, well this kind, of magic. It isn't reality. Just like violence in video games causes people to be violent. Hobeywash! You have to seperate the nonreality from reality. If you can't do that, then that is your own fault.

There's no need for such decisive language in a thread full of unfounded, random opinions. ;)

What would you consider a "heckuva convincing argument" and why do you declare so absolutley that magic doesn't exist today? I saw a lot of demonic activity in the years I was involved in the occult but of course you will just scoff at that and say that it isn't true. It must be very liberating to be able to selectively reject scripture based on what you want to believe. Somehow, I'm not surprised at this coming from you. :sigh:

Edited to add:

ROLF Nevermind. I just realized how stupid and pointless this is. I'm arguing about the existence of magic with some kid on the internet. :D :D :D
