Kelly and WhirlwindMonk it sounds like you both are involved with fairly level headed groups and that is my concern about people starting out because there are lot freaks involved in role playing games.

That's the problem...there are freaks involved with everything. That's why we had witch burnings back a long time ago...why some people run out and kill and blame it on a game...

There is nothing...not even the Bible that someone will turn into a freak over and twist things to explain away their own mental problems. =(

Yes what you said is true that's why I would encourage anyone thinking of getting involved with one of these games to get to know the all the people there playing with I'm just saying that your might want to find out if you want to play with these guys after all you don't waste your money on roleplayong stuff just to find out that the members of role playing group your able to get into are psycho.

I Have played DND on an off for quite a while but mostly it is with non christians. We dont go in for all the heavy stuff and it usually turns into a comidy coffee fulled adventure where we have a laugh. non of us take it seriously but i hope that if one of my mates did take it to far (Started to try summoning Demons etc) that I would be able to explain to them just what they are tyring to do.
And why is it all these people have no probs believing in Demons but tell them that angels exist and they look at you funny and stop refilling your coffee cup?
Anyone ever tryed to draw an angel that looks a bit more grrrrr or are they all just fat kids with wings?

I'd love to have a Boris Vallejo painting with a small child praying and right behind them a guardian angel with a very fierce look and hand on hilt of his sword and the caption, "Don't even think about it."

Here are some pics of St. Michael the Archangel.

Some of the angels in the OT and in Revelation are creepy.

I think the assumption that "many people who play rpgs are weird" is a horrible stereotype. I've been playing for most of my life and can count the 'wierd 'players I've encountered on one hand with fingers to spare. And they were weird-light. Mostly, they wanted to have a very unique (read 'scene stealing') uber-powerful character. They wanted to be the star of the show, they put a lot of stock in their characters exploits. When they themselves were somewhat introverted or nerdy. Nobody that actually scared me or anything.

Yeah, being a real gamer can be tough. I have a hard time with precision mouse control wearing full gauntlets and am forever getting the comb of my helm caught in the ceiling fan. And let's just not even talk about the time with the katar and the monitor...

You forgot about the plate mail and the rolling computer chairs you spend more time on your back than playing.

There are people that I know that say that D&D is a satanic game, and to play it is to worship the devil. However, I have different thoughts, I feel that it is perfectly okay. Yes, there is magic and demons, but it is only bad if the person, or christian, believes that they can do the magic and summon all the demons, and dragons, and other mythical creatures, but all my friends, including me, don't believe it, so I guess that I think that it is okay. What do you think?

I think it depends on the way in which your group plays. That's the nice thing about RPGs; it's up to you what message they carry.

Every group I've ever encountered, or would feel comfortable joining, plays it as a fun game to pass the time and talk for hours, and each member works toward a common goal of defeating monsters or finishing a quest. Some groups probably take it more seriously and send more dangerous messages, but that's the product of interpretation, which is the great individual element of D&D. Overall, D&D is neither inherently good nor inherently evil, but may be represented in any manner according to each group and individual.

I think I should clarify some; I think that D&D is mildly good by nature, and that if you don't think about it much, the essential structure of the game inherently promotes core Christian values. More generally, I think all role-playing promotes empathy.

In short, I think D&D is only harmful if some effort is going into making it harmful, and I think it is beneficial by default.

So, when my cleric reaches lvl 8, I won't have the real power and be able to cast Mind Bondage (tm) on my dad so he will buy me lots of D&D paraphernalia?

forgivensinner001, I think it's time you learned some real spells.

lol, that comic is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. I was laughing so hard when I read it.

Uh-oh, I failed my Will save vs. replying to this thread!

I like being able to get together with some buddies and bash some monsters for a few hours... and the flexibility of being able to delve into something deeper if we so desire. D&D can be a great field to explore spiritual themes and the like that might otherwise be a lot more difficult to. A lot of it is really what you read into it. You can find evil just about anywhere you look (I know my toaster has given me a few threatening looks! ^_^) but at the same time it can also be turned into good.

But man... I could share SO many funny D&D stories... and I have a whole folder stuffed full of character sheets. (There's, like, two characters of mine that I have yet to find, haha.)

There are SO many things wrong with that Chick tract it's hilarious. What, no saving throw or a chance at a res later?! Man, that DM's tough!

Incidentially, I finally had my first character die a week ago. Poor Paladin... her Druid friend thought it would be a good idea to blow up a gelatinous cube. :p

Oh, man, aparentally, one of my friends was playing as a Minatour, and he was EXTREAMLY strong, and he and one of my other friends were stuck in some sort of cube. So, my other friend (I'll call him Friend "B") thought it was a good idea to try to break out of it, so he rolled to get it, and he rolled a twenty, rolled again, rolled a 19, then rolled once more. This third time was a 20. So, with that, my Minatour friend died. Died like no man's buisness. All because of 3 lucky rolls (though, not so lucky for him, lol)
