Or those insensitive Christians who wouldn't bow down to the golden image and were thrown into the fiery furnace

I'm leaning towards the view that the best time to show yourself a Christian to people is while they are alive. Not much good after they're deid.

I go to funerals to respect the living, not the dead… if its someone I really cared for then I am there for myself…. otherwise I go to be supportive of friends or loved ones… and if the deceased is unsaved and everyone is saying how they are in heaven. I share how I do not fear death, bc I know I have a relationship with Jesus Christ and there is no one more loving then He…. I leave all the questions for them to think about when that time comes…
if someone asks if that person is in heaven or hell, I tell them only God knows and what it takes to have the assurance of heaven, I pray that the deceased knew the Lord…. bc they will meet Him now… but He is a loving God and merciful and there is no place I'd rather be than in front of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And it is best to make yourself known to Him before you die….They will have to be the one to decide for themselves what they think…

What about the funeral of an unbeliever who has died?

I don't think it wise to proclaim their in hell. We really don't know what takes place between them and God in those last few minutes/seconds of life and death.

I see what you mean, but I think the conversation will inevitably turn round to 'what about my loved one that has passed away'............

....God is merciful and just and will have made every effort to make sure their loved one knew the truth. We don't know what happens between them and God during the last moments of life.

That's very true. We don't know. We all have hope for our loved ones that we don't think were saved that in their last days they searched for God.

But does it help the loved ones to perpetuate a lie? They might end up lost themselves, if no-one tells them the truth.

I understand the dilemma and hope I never find myself faced with it.
But God is the judge. Just because someone has not responded to Jesus in our presence, or with our knowledge, does that mean that they could not possibly have cried out to God during their final moments, been convicted by the Spirit while in a coma, or whatever?

I doubt any of us can ever know for certain if someone has heard, and responded to, the Good News, so I think it would be wrong to pass judgement that the deceased is in hell.
Apart from which, if the family are atheists, assurance that their loved one is in God's presence may be of no comfort at all.
