Should Christians fish?

Is fishing a Christian type of sport??

Strictly going by the Bible, I imagine fishing would be fine for Christians. Going by most standards of Christian morality, hooking a creature through the mouth and then killing it without needing to eat it for your own pleasure would represent a form of sadism. Christians tend to be in opposition to things like sadism, so I think you'd find that most Christians would disapprove of fishing if they gave it some thought.

Yeah Jesus could do what ever he wanted to do. He can have it both ways. He could have the mantlepeice and the fish could live.


And yes they can also go hunting too




None of us are permitted to insist on our own way in these matters. It's God we are answerable to-all the way from life to death and everything in between-not each other. That's why Jesus lived and died and then lived again: so that he could be our Master across the entire range of life and death, and free us from petty tyrannies of each other...

I don't think God would mind us fishing.

However, I do not think we should discuss any form of killing as a sport. Sports are for recreation. When we start killing things for pleasure, then I believe a line has been crossed. You kill to sustain yourself and your family, but not for pleasure.

I don't think the actual fishing aspect of christianity was that important. They just happened to be living in that society, at the time. However, I may be wrong. Maybe eating fish is actually more compassionate and christian than eating animals.

The next day as the three traveler were approaching the town. Peter went out on the balcony to pray. It was about noon. Peter got hungry and started thinking about lunch. While lunch was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw the skies open up. Something that look like a huge blanket lowered by ropes at its four corner settled on the ground. every kind of animal and reptile and bird you could think of was on it. Then a voice came. "Go to it Peter-kill and eat." Peter said. "Oh no, Lord. I've never so much as tasted food that was not kosher." The voice came a second time "If God says it's okay, it's okay".

Sports hunting there is no mention of it in the Bible so you have Liberty.

Yes, but not a mammal and also much further down the evolutionary chain than we are. They are much less developed than we are. Whereas a pig, for example, has compatible body parts to humans (for transplants). I find that fact very distasteful (pardon the pun). I'm glad that I am vegetarian.

Did these fishermen fish for sport, or did they fish to keep themselves, their famlies, and their customers fed?

I fish every chance I get. Where I live, we have the best fishing in North America, outside of the Florida Keys.

I've seriously considered getting my captain's license and becoming a guide. Not this year, but maybe within the next couple.

For those of you who are fixated on killing fish that we don't eat, you do know that all but a handful of fishermen practice catch and release, right? And that those who don't are generally shunned by the rest of us?

Did you know that in tournament fishing, which I do about every other weekend from April through December, points and weight are deducted and you can even be disqualified if your catch dies?

so is Jimmy Houston!! I have worhiped the Lord with all of them at Sunday services during Bassmaster University courses...

I am not a christian but I voted "yes" that christians should be able to fish. Myself, I been fishing since I was old enough to hold both ends of the rod off the ground.

but in retrospect, perhaps I should have picked "no" as how can a christian fish and not sin? ever know a fisherman to tell the truth???

Fishing is not meant to be sport, but instead to sustain life, both in the physical and in the spiritual.

Physical Example:
Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. Genesis 9:1
