  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Should a Christian join the "roundtable"

If this 'round table' is the usual group of 'experts' that discuss locally important issues you should not join as they are rife with political and economic influences and considerations that a Christian is not equipped to deal with. They'll chew you up and spit you out, and with help from the moderator. I have been invited to sit in on such a round table on a local radio station. I decline for this very reason. I email my opinions to the show and let it go at that.

It has been suggested to me that I join the local "round table" group.

My question is, is it one of those "odd" societies like the Masons, in which case I would not want to have anything to do with it?

Does any one know?

Business Breakfast Clubs are better for networking.

Is it a one-time meeting, or ongoing? Is it connected with any decision-making groups, like parliament?

Where I'm from, roundtable is a generic term, usually as wiseguy describes. A hosting organization wants to show they have big names, but they don't necessarily want to hear/show what the experts have to say - they'd prefer boosting ratings by pitting opposing viewpoints.

There are good examples of roundtables too. A quieter host might want a balanced set of opinions shown. In a conference, it's a chance to meet a lot of big names at once and hear their outlooks, so if you're invited to a conference where this is just one meeting, then it's a flattering and reasonable thing to take advantage of.

And looks good on the CV.
