Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep(Luke 15:6).
I was reminded what I had heard & read on the ''Dead letter Word'' .
Christ lives & is the ''Word''
We pray words in our humanity with the Holy Spirits inspiration & we know words have the power to lift up or even destroy. There is more to the bible than mere black script.
Quoted from a friend who has more clarity than I.
''''I think that it is important to realise that the bible represents Gods concepts.
Individual words, although important in availing oneself of the sense of what is written, come second as they are just a tool in representing the concepts.
God is in control of his word and His concepts and if there is something He particularly wants us to understand about His word, than no amount of mistranslation or misconception of others ideas will stop Him.
Its like our working out our salvation.
If our intention is right and we hold ourselves available to do Gods bidding, are obedient to Him and keep Him in first position/authhority in our lives, we cannot fail and our salvation is secure.
If we try to do it all ourselves we have lost before we begin:o
The same applies in studying the bible.
If we do it in our own strength and put our intelectual understanding in a position of authority, then we might understand what the words say, but do we comprehend the concepts behind them?
I think it is important to allow the Holy Spirit to guide us when we are studying and ask Him to give us wisdom and descernment when we read.
Having said that, I do find that knowing Coine Greek is an enormous help in understanding the words, leading to the concepts. I would recomend anyone with the time to study to learn it.
But having done so, I feel it is also only a tool and paramount in study is reliance on the Holy Spirit.
Not knowing the precise meaning of every word is not essential to the salvation of lost souls.
I happen to have an enquiring mind and enjoyed exercising my brain when learning.
But it doesnt make me a whit more loveable to God and it doesnt make me any nearer salvation.
It is a commodity, a worldly possession...it is knowledge but it is not wisdom.
"Knowledge puffs up" Paul says, "but love builds up"
So if my knowledge makes me feel proud and in some way superior, then I am not loving others in the way I ought. So what good, spiritually, has learning Greek done me?
True it has increased my knowledge but is in danger of lessening my wisdom and compassion.''''
