I have always hated life jackets as well. And even though I am a fairly strong swimmer, I will be the geek to rock that bright orange vest. Yeah, remember the super ugly ones from your childhood? I'm all over those ;)
But hey in truth, it doesn't hurt and undercurrents can be surprisingly strong.

I guess it's a difference between people who have been around water a lot versus people who haven't. I grew up on the great plains was terrified the first time I was on a boat and couldn't see land.

This reminds me of when we talked about Paul's ship wreck in bible class. The teacher asked if any of us had ever been at sea during bad weather, another guy and I had grown up near the shore and had plenty of experience with boats told stories that seemed like no big deal to us. Those who really hadn't spent much time on a boat were like "NOPE NOPE NOPE"

Its all fun and games until they hit an underwater rock that nobody knows about or a floating log and they are all in the water not knowing what to do because they do not know what just happened. Then somebody gets a cramp and its no longer just fun and games.

I am sending this picture to the boat safety people and having them analyze it for future projections on boat safety day.

The caption will read..."something could have happened but it did not so this picture is not that important but it was all we had to fill up some time during boat safety".

I know I always try and wear one, but I follow the rules. ;)

PS. In my lifejacket I am actually cooler.

You shouldn't be going that fast to wear you would hit an underwater rock or floating log.

One of my sisters on her sailing trip across the Great Lakes. This time she left from Chicago up to Mackinac Island. That's the Mackinac Bridge in the background, which I believe is the longest suspension bridge in the world. I could be wrong. She's the one in purple.

Do they still do the "people on the upper peninsula are Yoopers and the people below the bridge are trolls" thing?

Man they must be board up there.

This is true. You tell him, Safety Officer Matt, haha. On a serious note, it really depends on the body of water you are sailing/boating. I am not sure if I am one of the only posters here that has experienced the Falls, but I did wear a life jacket when I went on a jet boat ride in class 5 rapids in the whirlpool. That is very different from a leisurely boat ride. Not that a life jacket would even save you in any way in those rapids.

I drive a canoe, what do I care?

And while in my canoe I always have my lifejacket on me or tied to me. Stuff happens fast and most times there is not time for proper reaction.

I have done many rapids. I grew up on creeks and rivers. I floated most every week on many rivers in the Ozarks. Nothing like the Grand Canyon but still lots of river experience.

Okay, that's different. A canoe is much more likely to capsize than a motorized boat. In that case, it would be possible to hit your head as it flipped and be knocked unconscious.

Exactly, it really does depend on the water. My experience with boating has either been in shallow ocean water, bays, or lakes. It's either fishing, leisurely boating, or occasionally tubing/water skiing.

What are you doing in that canoe? White water rafting? Yankee is right, canoes are much more likely to capsize than a motorboat.

Surprisingly not. I grew up fishing with my dad and brothers, but I never did that. I don't like the cold, what can I say, haha.

You're Canadian and you've never been ice fishing!? That's like a Texan who has never rode a horse.

You hate hockey to, don't you?

Not quite. I like hockey and will watch a game from time to time, but it's not a sport I follow like baseball and football. I might start following it a bit more now that Buffalo got a great player in the draft. I live really close to Buffalo and my dad and brother are Sabers fans.

I want to try it once at least.

When I was a truck driver I was up in North Lawrence NY State and it was April but the ground was still snow covered and the rivers were flowing with ice. It was so cool. I love how the area felt. The song life in a northern town keep coming to mind as it described it perfect.
