no one has. I just pray in tongues sometimes before going to bed. And lately I've been shaking/twitching after speaking in tongues like involuntary muscle spasms.
You need to get out of your mind that tongues is some kind of ecstatic thing. It is the cold blooded deliberate speaking of a language to God in prayer. The only thing you should sense is a sense of satisfaction that God is hearing and appreciating your prayer to Him. I think this shaking and twitching is a distraction to get your mind off Christ and on to yourself.

My body starts twitching and shaking after praying in tongues. I'm not sure what's going on. Is that common?
This is a tough matter, and unless someone knows the language you're speaking (if it is an earthly language) no one can say for sure if it's true tongues or false. I believe there is such a thing as an imitation tongue, but i don't want to worry or concern you. Just pray about it and use your discernment, no one not me not anyone here not a pastor can tell you if what you're praying is genuine tongues, that is between you and God, but if it is something negative you'll know.

I speak from experience. I spent years wanting to speak in tongues and i had many people lay hands on me. Then later i started feeling bad and dizzy after praying in tongues. I believe i got a false tongue sadly and have since not prayed in tongues. I 100% believe tongues are real i'm not doubting, rather i know that the enemy will try to imitate. I had to use my own discernment to stop, and it wasn't easy to decide because to this day i longed to speak in true tongues, but i felt HORRIBLE when i prayed in what i believe now was a false tongue.

The best way to know that you have received the authentic ability to pray in tongues is to follow the Scriptural steps to ask and receive anything according to God's will. If we follow the steps below, there is no way that you will receive anything different than the real thing. This is promised by what Jesus said, "If an evil man knows how to give good gifts to his children, how much more does God know to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" Previously He said, "If a child asks for bread, will he be given a stone? Or asks for fish, will he be given a snake?" Of course the logical answer is "no". So here are the steps.

1. You need to know that the ability to pray in tongues is God's will for you. Paul, speaking by inspiration from the Holy Spirit said, "I would you all speak with tongues". That pretty well settles it from Scripture.

2. Then you need to ask for the ability to pray in tongues. Phil 4:4-6 says, "Everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God", and, "If you ask for anything according to the will of God, you will receive it."

3. Next you need to say to the Lord, "I receive the ability to pray in tongues". This is supported by, "He who asks receives." As soon as you ask, God hands it out to you. By faith you take it from HIs hands.

4. Believe that you have the ability to pray in tongues. You prove that by activating your faith by making up a language you have never learned. Some object, saying that it is not of the Holy Spirit to make up the language. I say, "How can you activate your faith unless you try to make up a language?" What happens when you try, although it may be a bit hesitant at first, the rivers of living water starts to flow out of you in an expressive, articulate, fluent language where you lose the sense of trying to make it up because the words are now flowing out of you in a language you know you are not making up.

One way of helping the flow to happen is to think of a serious prayer request where you need to intercede for someone in real need. Ask the Lord to guide you tongue and while thinking of that person start to pray for them in the language you have not learned. When you start to intercede in the Spirit, the language will come and it may surprise you the depth and fluency of the language that comes out of you for that person. After a while you will get a witness in your spirit that God has answered that prayer and you will get that peace of God that passes all understanding that the prayer has been heard.

The accompanying emotions that I have witnessed when someone has started praying in tongues is a sense of joy and peace and a new sense of the reality of God. But we don't depend on those emotions and senses. We depend on our faith in 1 Corinthians 14:2 where it says, "Those who speak in tongues speak to God, hence no man understands him, but he speaks mysteries in the Spirit."

There is always a definite purpose in praying with tongues. We don't pray just for the sake of it. Either we pray because we have a desire just to fellowship with the Lord in the Spirit. Paul says, "I pray with the understanding [my own language] and with the Spirit [in tongues}, I sing with the understanding and sing with the Spirit." Or we want words to express our praise and devotion to the Lord and find that we don't have words to give Him the praise He deserves, so we ask him to give us the words to praise him and then give our praise in tongues. As I said before, when we see the need to intercede for someone, we need the tongues language in the Spirit to break through the hindrances and get the victory for that person. Tongues is a powerful tool for that. Once, I was told about a woman in hospital with serious bleeding in her stomach and the doctors couldn't stop it. They were in fear for her life. This was around 2008 just after I joined CF. It was a member's mother and he asked me to pray for her. So I asked the Lord for the most powerful language to intercede for her. The language I got was a very fast Oriental type language. After 20 minutes I felt really drained and hollowed out with the intensity of the language, No way I could ever have made up a language like that. Then I received peace and the language stopped. Later, I found out that the woman in the hospital in the UK, and I was 12,000 miles away in New Zealand, that the flow of blood stopped at the exactly the same time as when I prayed. It was 11am in NZ and 11pm in London. I saw that as a miracle of intercession, and it was achieved through praying in the Holy Spirit.

So, if you follow the Scriptural steps of asking and receiving, there is no way you can get false tongues. God will give you exactly what you ask for. I can see how you got false tongues in the first place, possibly because you followed someone else's advice and didn't go through the Scriptural steps. But I can assure you that if you follow those Scripture steps that I have outlined, you should have no fear of receiving anything but the real thing. And you won't get any strange manifestations with it, because praying in tongues is an act of faith in God's word in the asking, receiving and using the ability in the way God designed it.

Just be careful is all, i was for a long time stubborn and continued to pray in what i believe was a false tongue and it negatively affected me to a degree i wouldn't want anyone to experience and it took time to recover. It's sad really. At the end of the day i wish we lived in a perfect world where such negativity didn't exist. I 100% encourage those who have the real gift to continue in it and not doubt, all i ask is that they be vigilant if the fruit produced from such praying in tongues are thorns instead of good fruit to be ok with reconsidering what they are doing and pray for the real gift i so wanted myself when i was seeking.

I have given you the Scriptural steps to receiving the real ability to pray in tongues. It is really up to you to determine whether you have the faith in God's promises to use those steps to receive that ability. I think that you were given a bum steer originally and it has seriously damaged your faith concerning receiving tongues. But you really want to receive the true gift, my advice would be to continue in prayer and study of the appropriate Scriptures to strengthen your faith and given time and diligence in seeking the Lord through prayer and the Scriptures, the time will come when you will have the confidence to receive tongues and know that you have received the real thing.

I saw a group of people around some poor guy laying hands on him and half the group were saying "hold on brother" and the other half saying "let go brother", and the poor brother was totally confused. So I asked the Lord to show me a better way. And the steps of faith were what the Lord showed me, and then when someone asked me to help him or her with tongues, I would sit them down in a quiet place over a cup of coffee and take them through the steps. No emotion, no hype, no laying on of hands. All I did was guide them through the steps where I encouraged them to ask and receive then I told them to try and speak the language. Often they would come out immediately with a wonderful language. Others would need some help to start speaking so I would give them my tongue to give them the idea of how to form the words, then I would tell them to speak without stopping. Every time they did that they came out with a totally different language that was unique to them. There was no emotion other than joy that they were able to speak in tongues.

One funny incident where I was encouraging a group to speak in tongues and I told them not to speak just with their mouths but let the words come right from inside of them. One guy spoke in tongues with a language like a Japanese Sumo wrestler. After a short while, he complained that his stomach was getting sore! I realised that he was literally trying to speak from his stomach, so I corrected him by telling him to speak from his heart and let the language flow out of him and not to tense his abdominal muscles while speaking.

Be careful about reading too much about what cessationists say about tongues, either on CF or other websites. They can muddy the waters and corrupt your faith. I have been praying in tongues for many years and seen wonderful results, but when I read some of the cessationist posts on CF I came under conflict, and had to earnestly seek the Lord for the answers. He told me, "I wrote a whole chapter on tongues, and you need just to believe it. My word is much more reliable than anything you read to the contrary on the forum." So I based by faith on 1 Corinthians 14:2, and that settled the issue for me. But then I have a strong background in God's Word over more than 50 years. I feel sorry for those who do not have that background and who are more vulnerable to discouragement concerning their faith in tongues.

it has been traumatizing you are correct, but when i've tried to pray in the past in tongues since i stopped it just makes me dizzy and feel bad, so i've prayed to Jesus to understand my reason for stopping.

That being said i will never quench the Holy Spirit, if one wants to pray in tongues don't let me stop you. All i say is be vigilant.

I don't have an answer to that one. All I know is that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy and peace. That's is what you should be sensing when praying in tongues. It seems to me that there is something that is not of God that is being a hindrance. If you don't feel dizzy and bad when speaking English, then you shouldn't feel it when you speak in tongues, because all you are doing is speaking another language. I wonder if you are trying to force something when it should be a flow from within.

He might ask you why you didn't follow the steps of faith that He provided. It's like the guy who was trapped on his roof in a flood and he asked the Lord to rescue him. Along came a helicopter, but he turned it away saying, "God will rescue me." Then came someone along in a rowboat, but he turned that away, saying, "God will rescue me." At last the floodwaters swept him away to his death. When he got to meet the Lord, he asked Him, "Why did you not rescue me?" The Lord answered, "I did!" "How?" the man asked. "Well, I sent a helicopter and you refused it, so I sent someone along in a rowboat and you refused that as well, so what else I could do?"

Sometimes we can be so heavenly minded that we miss the obvious practical steps to receive what we desire from the Lord.

Trust me, i know you mean well, i've spent hours and days trying to speak in tongues, i just worry about people who say things like "you just don't have enough faith to pray in tongues" this is veering to topics where Christians unknowingly hurt other Christians when they intend good but speak from a place where they haven't experienced what the specific believer has experienced. If you knew how hard i tried to pray in tongues, how much i wanted to, and how much i was negatively affected by praying in false tongues you wouldn't push tongues so much on me.

But i'm used to it i've already had other christians push tongues on me so hard that i ended up leaving that church. I've been a part of a church where i asked the pastor if i could pray in english and i was told to pray in tongues and this church had everyone praying in tongues all at once, kind of like a pentecostal church.

We have to remember there are other gifts besides tongues, and if everyone is praying in tongues people aren't speaking in turn and having an interpreter.

Please understand i am just saying to be careful, not trying to be referred to as the foolish person in a flood so often used amongst christians today to refer to people that are "foolish" when in reality people don't know who they are talking to or what they have experienced.

My body starts twitching and shaking after praying in tongues. I'm not sure what's going on. Is that common?
It is not right. I would seek advice from someone who is experienced in deliverance ministry.

I was desperate for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I saw that there was a lack in my life and I was sure that I needed the Holy Spirit. I was prayed for, exhorted, criticised and rebuked. One church I went to was a breath of fresh air. A friend took me there. The man who prayed for said, "You're not ready yet". No judgement, just a word of truth.

Christmas Eve 1974, I was staying with friends. I was reading a book by Pat Boon, all about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The last page said that some people fail to receive because they had become obsessed with the gift and neglected the Giver. It was as if a spell had been broken. I sensed the Holy Spirit and I began to speak in tongues without effort.

I don't speak in tongues now. I just have no desire to. My wife prays in tongues and that's fine.

Speaking in tongues does not mean a person is spiritual. Some of the hardest hearted Christians I've met were full on Pentecostals. One reason is the seemingly almost irresistible inclination to spiritual pride. It's a gift. Undeserved. It does not make anyone superior to another.

I have no idea. I've got to say though, I've seen all sorts out there. Some say that will be the power of the holy spirit soo...
It is interesting that I don't see anything in the New Testament that talks about the power of the Holy Spirit, except when Jesus told the Apostles to wait in Jerusalem until they are "endued with power from on high." But what was that power? It was the power to preach the Gospel of Christ and see souls saved. This is backed up by what Paul said: "I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ. It is the power of God leading to salvation to those who believe." When Paul went to preach to the Corinthians, he said that he was not coming with the enticing words of man's wisdom, but in power and demonstration of the Spirit. How did he do that? He said, "I am determine to know nothing among you save Christ and Him crucified." That was the power of God according to Paul, not the shaking, jerking, falling down milarkey that is seen in some hyped up Charismatic meetings.

Thanks for your post! This is exactly how I went about it yesterday and felt God say yes I am giving you the gift of tongues and I just started speaking, it didn't sound like a coherent language, but it was my first time and I was just letting it flow from within. I didn't have many emotions about it I just let it flow. We are told to pray in SPIRIT and in Truth. Praying in the spirit is how we are recharged. I follow pastor John Fenn who says praying in tongues for 10 minutes is like a 2 hour nap for him, he comes away recharged.

This is in line with the Scripture from Jude: "Building ourselves up in our most holy faith, praying in the Spirit." Praying in tongues builds up our faith and trust in God. It makes God's Word real to us and clears the way for the Holy Spirit to speak to us through verses and passages in the Word. It also brings us a real sense of peace knowing that whatever circumstances we face, we can trust that when God promises, He honours. This doesn't usually involve the emotions such as having "highs", but rather involves a confident knowledge that God is there for us and that we can trust Him entirely.

Some Biblical purposes for tongues:
-Personal prayer language - Speaking to/with God (I Cor 14:4)
-Intercessory prayer language - Praying for others in the Spirit (Rom 8:26-27).
-Warfare language - Tongues directly aimed at demonic strongholds (Eph 6:18-19)
-Prophetic language - Addressing the whole church/preferably with interpretation - (I Cor 12:10; 14:5, 26)
-Singing in the Spirit - Singing in tongues/worship activity (I Cor 14:14-15)
-Praise language - Magnifying the Lord in worship tongues ( Acts 10)
-Evangelistic language - Speaking the message of God to a people in their own language (not learned by the speaker). (Acts 2: 4, 6. 8).
(Saint Steven, a CF poster, gave permission to use his basic list).

Tongues are a sign - To unbelievers By believers

"Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not:" "And these signs shall follow them that believe; ...they shall speak with new tongues; (I Cor 14:22 and Mark 16:17)

There's over 6500 languages and some are unusual including clicking sounds. But God isn't limited to those.

The laying on of hands isn't necessary to receive such as in the Upper Room.
