  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Isnt that anthropomorphism and Sarterian "bad faith"?

I think that would be the cart leading the horse.

I think our abstract thinking comes from the abstraction made possible by genes and life, so we are genetopomorphicly rational.

Life was reasoning before thinking was possible.

Your genes are looking to survive.

Survival is it's own rational.

I get the feeling we are using the word 'rational' differently.

Survival is something you have to value, you can't derive it solely from reason. I would say survival is generally a moral good, but morality is more than just reason. But I don't think it matters what they genes 'want'. They aren't sentient. Saying that we should try to survive because it is in the nature of our genes is like saying we should drop rocks because it is in the nature of a rock to fall.

Parodoxum I ought to qualify happiness as good if it is a rational happiness in the face of the wider landscape of value-presenting-itself.

I agree survival is morally good, morally rational, but morality is more than pure rationality.

It is not rational in the light of the value of welfare to as a rule persue self injurous ends, so it is ethically wise (and logical) to be saddened by such inclinations.

I don't know what this sentence means. :p

I get the feeling we are using the word 'rational' differently.

We are using differn't application of the word but not it's meaning.

Survival is something you have to value, you can't derive it solely from reason.

As I said to GS I think abstract reasoning is derived from survival and I also think "value" starts there.

We have reasoning to help us persist and exist we do not exist and persist to be reasonable. We find value in things as they are valuable to our existence and continuing our existence.

I would say survival is generally a moral good, but morality is more than just reason.

Right, morality is the mixing of value and reason with an eye toward existence and persistence.

But I don't think it matters what they genes 'want'. They aren't sentient.

They aren't sentient like you or I are, as in the abstract self aware type of sentience, but they absolutely dictate survival as a value objectively.

This is what it means to be alive, to strive to continue to be alive.

Saying that we should try to survive because it is in the nature of our genes is like saying we should drop rocks because it is in the nature of a rock to fall.

If something is part of your nature it is a part of you. Survival is at the core of your nature so of course it is moral and rational.

It is more than that even, it is the reason for rationality and morality.

Rationality and morality are developed to fulfill the imperatives of being a living being, they are a result of life.
