  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sulphur: If you're doing Protein 209, you're not doing Seti. You're doing the protein folding one.

Seti@home is almost done, at least with it's initial run. They're scraping up the cash right now to do two things:

1) They've developed an open source "framework" that will allow users to integrate (and control how much processer time) gets allocated to any distrubted program using it. That means, if the protein folding people and the AIDS people create programs using the already existing open-source stuff, you can have all three installed, and choose how much of your spare cycles to allot to each. No more "only one" problem.

2) They're going to split a feed off a big telescope in Australia. Better sky angle, more data, better part of the spectrum and continue the project.

Oh, and they're going into actual analysis of all the flagged signals from seti@home.

I have thought about it a few times, but I don't see an advanced civilization using radio.

they only have to be as advanced as us.  our radio broadcasts are going out in every direction.   maybe someone will pick it up in a few hundred thousand years.

I just don't think that people more advanced than us will be using radio. I'm probably wrong but I just think it's wishful thinking.

But they may be advanced enough to know that WE would be using radio waves.
