• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I`m looking for ways to handle my sons sensory issues~lights, sounds, ect. (He`s having a real struggle in school with this (He`s having "meltdowns" in school with this on an almost daily basis),(were actually in Mediation at this time) I also think he may have been mis-diagnosed as a toddler~I`ve read Tad`s thread on Aspergers, and that really sounds like my son!~Thanks to all (thanks Tad)~God bless

I wanted to at least take a moment to answer this so you know you have been heard. I am more than happy to share some of my sensory issues with you, but first can you tell me a little more about your son so that I may address the issues you are need most first. For example, you say he is having issues with lights, and sounds...in what way...are the flourescent lights bothering him...is it too bright...does he end up getting mesmerized by lights etc. Sounds...why types of sounds are bothering him...

There is just so much variation in autism that each individual is just that an individual and thier needs need to be addressed one by one...if you are too uncomfortable sharing such details here...let me know through PM and I will address those issues in general here or in my Sensory thread that I posted...or I may start a new one...I really believe that sensory issues are seriously overlooked in the autism community.

I am super sensitive to noise levels, and have to wear sunglasses outside much of the time or I end up with headaches. I do have a few tricks up my sleeve. I am putting together a few things for you and will post them as soon as I can. (I had an emergency last night and will try to get to it tonight or barring anything unforseen at the latest tomorrow night).

But I do want you to realize I am not an expert on Autism...I am an expert on me...and what works for me may or may not work for your son...trial and error is the method that is going help you figure out what works. I would, however, seriously consider taking him to an Occupational Therapist (OT) one that specializes in sensory integration and allow them to do a sensory profile on your son. A sensory profile is simply a series of questions that will evaluate how significant his senses are affecting his performance...it will help determine all the different areas in which can be addressed to find better solutions for your son. When it is a child I do believe one or both parents actually fill out the checklist as well. And the OT will help you find a sensory diet that will help your son cope better with his environment. I have been seeing one since Aug. And boy has that helped me. I never even knew that there was such a thing as feeling good...everything was either tolerable or not. I wish I had seen one when I was little...it would have helped me tremndously.

Also when you say you are in mediation please help me understand what you mean. Remember I don't have kids in school and the school systems have changed drastically since I was there.

I truely do want to help you and your son out...and there are several mothers and other Aspies that post in this forum that are also here for you.

And keep the questions coming!!!!
That is the only way we will all learn.

hugs,
Tad
