Senator Tuberville's one-man blockade of military promotions leads to Marines [and Army (and Navy)] not having a commandant

Oh dear. I feel so owned. It's enough to distract me from Tuberville's intransigence and the impending shutdown of the federal government due to the GOP's inability to get its own House in order.

I assumed Senator Blutarsky was already on it.

Owning libs instead of passing legislation that helps working class Americans. That's the modern Republican party.

....The Senate needs to take action against Tuberville. Change the rules for approving military positions. Republican Senators are done with him:

On Wednesday night, a remarkable scene unfolded on the Senate floor as several Republicans, including Sens. Dan Sullivan (Alaska), Joni Ernst (Iowa) Todd C. Young (Ind.) and Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.) confronted Tuberville, imploring him to lift his hold for the sake of national security and proposing votes on individual officers whose promotions have been delayed. Tuberville rebuffed them one by one, blocking each proposed nominee as his colleagues’ frustration continued to rise.

The confrontation stretched nearly five hours, with Ernst, a retired Army officer, and Sullivan, a colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve, rotating to bring forward the bulk of 61 officers presented by name. They called out Tuberville for saying previously that he would relent on nominations that were brought forward for votes individually.

“Xi Jinping is loving this. So is Putin," Sullivan said at one point, referring to top leaders in China and Russia. "How dumb can we be, man?”

Just remember, at least per Tuberville", there is no one more military than he is. This, despite Tuberville never actually serving in the military, and the large number of those in the Senate that actually served in the military; to say nothing of the crippling of the military his blocking promotions has caused.

Sen Sinema has reportedly been working with Republicans on a plan to circumvent Tuberville (though I'm not clear on the mechanism).

"Sinema shaped the resolution through many talks with Republicans — though it was formally introduced by Reed, who chairs the Armed Services Committee — and it has earned the support of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

In the Senate, one senator can slow a nominee for any reason, even when it comes to the military. Her plan is designed to prevent Tuberville from setting off a larger fight over the chamber and its arcane rules by allowing confirmations of military promotions as a group, avoiding the laborious procedural hoops they would otherwise have to clear given Tuberville’s holds.

Sinema worked closely with the Senate parliamentarian to avoid any substantive risk of her work becoming a rules change, which would have required 67 votes (her idea only needs 60). "

Is Sen. Tommy Tuberville's Pentagon promotions pause finally coming to an end?

Senate Democrats prepare a legislative end run around the Alabama Republican's obstructionist blockade

In a "dear colleagues" letter to Senate Democrats sent Sunday evening, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)announced plans to "swiftly confirm the hundreds of highly qualified and dedicated military leaders being held up by Senator Tuberville before the end of the year." The move, made possible by a party-line vote in the Democrat-controlled Senate Rule Committee earlier this month, would circumvent Tuberville's "extreme and unprecedented obstruction" which has "eroded centuries of Senate norms and injected extreme partisanship into what has long been a bipartisan process," Schumer wrote.

What next?

While Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) has called the push for a 60-vote threshold to overcome Tuberville's hold a "heavy lift among Republicans," fellow conservative Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) is reportedly "ready to consider" the resolution

Final little cave-in

Sen. Tuberville drops remaining holds on senior military promotions

After months of delay, 11 four-star level military promotions have been approved by the U.S. Senate.

The 11 promotions affected included the commanders of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pacific Air Forces, Air Combat Command, U.S. Northern Command, Cyber Command and Space Command, according to the Pentagon.
