  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Self control is something we all struggle with, isn't it? In the wall of text that I scanned through, a thought occurred to me about the relationship between self-control and patience. Especially when we're talking about self-control in the way that we respond to other people or make decisions in the heat of the moment. Another type of self-control could concern more of a materialistic view: abstaining from eating this, buying that, watching this, etc. Again, patience might be a helpful fruit of the spirit to combine with self-control. Usually, these impulses to speak, act, or consume are passing fancies, no matter how strong. Sometimes if we just take a minute (or two or a day), the feeling will pass. The scripture that comes to mind is "Be still and know that I am holy!" I'd love to keep this conversation going, because self-control is definitely a big topic that can't be covered in just a few posts.
