• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I was listen to a Christian radio station today. PLumb (the musician) came on and was talking about her song "CUt" and was talking about cutting and other forms of self harm. She seemed to really understand the issue and was making a lot of sense. And she refered to it as self abuse. I liked that term a lot. There are so many "terms" to call the behavior. I've kind of settled on self injury or self harm can't stand the word self mutiliation. But when she said self abuse....that kind of stuck with me. Kind of conjured up empathy, and sympathy and a softer feelign for the struggle the person is having and I felt like abuse was a good word for it. Anyone have any thoughts?

A topic about Plumb and Rich Mullins in your signature - you, my friend, have great taste in music :D. (Not that I'm biased in the least by my own taste in music ;)).

I've always been one to use the terms self-harm or self-injury too and I guess I'm not sure what I think about self-abuse. It certainly makes a person think though. I would have liked to hear what she said - maybe she'll become famous over here at some point and then I'll hear it :).

I like self abuse aswell actually... i think it really does kinda of introduce a new angle of SI...
Thanks Steffi
Plumb isn't famous over there?
I agree Becky I like the new angle it puts on it. Kind of like we are victims of abuse even though it is us doing it.

I hadn't heard of her until two weeks ago when a friend randomly came across her online and sent me a link. Give it time though - she'll be famous here in 6 months time ;).

I like the term self abuse as well. I have used it in my journaling but never in this forum. I didn't know if there was a common reference for it in here. Now we have it and can use it freely.

Try to remember who the abuser is. I know that my selfinjury was a continued pattern from my abuser. I just picked up where he left off and continued in his footsteps. I became the "abuser". I like what was said. "Self Abuse is a more loving term but remember that is self or us that is doing it."

I think it's a better word than self-mutilation. It's not like we chop off limbs or anything! lol
I usually say 'cutting', but around other people, I would say SI.
and Self-abuse definitely takes aways that view that we do it for pity attention, you know? I hate people who think that.
