  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I dont believe any music is sinfull unless it blasphemes or offends God. I asked a similar question on ask a chaplin forum, the advice i got was to trust your Christian guidence.
Then again we are reminded to do everything to the glory of God. If music helps you with that then i dont see any problem atall.

i supose thats also sinful in some ways, if it sings about lust or treating woman as sexual toys the answer is obviously do not support it. i also find it difficult to decide wether a song in sinful or not, i would say, take your knowledge of whats sinful for yourself to do and inspect the song to see if it encourages evil or supresses it.
Is this making any sense?

I got an IPod touch for christmas but I dont know what songs to out on. I like songs like hip hop, rock, pop. Is it sinfull to listen to secular music?

If you are asking this question, it's probably because the Holy Spirit is trying to tell you something. Over 90% of secular music out there have lyrics that are against the will of God. People can say that they like secular music, it doesn't bother them or the lyrics doesn't affect them, but the bible teaches that everything that comes in through your eyes and ears will have an effect on you. Listen to the lyrics carefully, and if you don't hear anything that is sin or contrary to the will of God, then I suppose it's okay to listen to.

A culture in whatever forms it uses - Music, dance, images, drama, literature, storytelling - tells us about its story, its values, struggles, hopes and so on. We must learn how to make Jesus relevant to our own culture by reinterpreting its messages with the good news of Jesus.

Every time Jesus spoke with a person who was not Jewish and therefore familiar with the OT he never quoted from it. Paul did likewise, and at Athens he quoted Greek literature and used the setting to connect with his audience. Frances Schaeffer is a more recent example of utilising culture in order to challenge it from a Christian perspective.

The words in the song will be the reason to listen or not listen. I mainly listen to worship/Christian music but have an admittedly embarrassing (I'm 39) love of cheesy pop music (think Taio Cruz). Some songs I don't listen to because of overtly sexual references or disdain for God. I can *tolerate* some bad words like He!! and maybe an occasional d!mn but not much more.

You will be convicted and know if the song is good for you, trust that :)

If you see me driving down the road rocking out to Taio Cruz or Usher don't point and laugh ^_^

Just look for quality music, it's usually not problematic spiritually. I mean why would you listen to get-myself-a-gun-and-I-will-kill-all-insertfavouriteexpletive crap.

Basically, you're free to listen to all music, watch all kinds of movies, play all kinds of video games, but don't switch off your sense and reason. For example, I love video games but there are games which just don't work for a christian. I mean, there is a game where you play a devil fighting against angels in a very immersive way, that's just not good. I don't mean to refer to rules because Apostle Paul says everything is lawful for a christian, but why would you want to fight angels or play as a scumbag like these devils? As christians we don't simply follow a rulebook because we have been made free of the law, but still we're supposed to think and not do evil and instead do the good things.

It's kind of a responsibility we have been given - we're not caged in a set of rules but we shall use our mind and seek godly guidance.

For an example, consider fantasy role playing video games, which I normally really like. Now in such a game, you often have magic. Real magic in real life is occult stuff which originates with the devil and is contrary to God's truth and vision for us. It's always uncanny stuff even when it masks itself as white magic. But magic in such fantasy games is just fun stuff, it's part human imagination and part fairytale. It bears no semblance to real magic. At least this used to be like that. But lately game developers aim for maximum realism, and them being atheists they don't believe there is any real magic out there and they don't believe there is a devil. So they experiment because they think it's harmless. That's where my alarm bells start ringing because the magic in computer games moves away from fun and entertainment stuff to come closer to what real, dark, occult magic is like. For example, there is a very popular computer game called Dragon Age where a little child is demon possessed and you can kill it to fulfill your quest. That's out of decency for me and though I bought that game once when I didn't know it was so bad, I don't play it anymore. But there are still harmless games, like Drakensang, it also has magic but it's funny and completely like in fairy tales and I don't think it's a problem at all.

It's the same with songs. Much secular music is still music about life. For example, Chris Rea in "Looking for the summer" sings about romantic love in youth which is something anyone can relate to and which we christians shouldn't label evil simply because it's not coming from within christianity. "Forbidding" such music serves no purpose and only makes the other people think we christians are fundie nuts. When the bible says we are called to be different than other people what is meant is that we live with God every day and don't share in the unbelief and in the sin of other people. But still there are commonalities between unbelieving people and christians. We can still relate to each other and we live with each other in daily life. And so we sometimes listen to the same music. Not everything an unbeliever does is sinful. They are also loved by God.

So bottom line is, don't turn christianity into a rulebook religion like the pharisees did, this doesn't please God. But use your mind with biblical guidance and always talk about everything with other christians and open your eyes to the truth. Rise out of the fleshly stuff and follow the Spirit where there is life and peace. Enjoy everything with thanksgiving and don't forget reason and wisdom! Jesus wants us to be free, but there are things that diminish this new freedom we have in our Christ and then we must be watchful and careful. YOU are a christian, YOU have the Holy Spirit, YOU know the truth in Christ!

I agree with a lot of what Chris_G said.

A lot of what secular music has in the lyrics is sin... Listening to some put bad thoughts into your head...
(I used to listen to a lot of secular music, it used to affect a lot of my mood and what I was thinking)

These verses come to mind:
Philippians 4:8: Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Romans 12:2: And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Sin devastates. Jesus can free us from the bondages of it. :)
Pray and follow Jesus! :)

Here are some christian artists, For Hip Hop: Lecrae, Flame, Tedashii, Sho Baraka, Trip Lee.. Rock: Flyleaf, Skillet, Switchfoot, Fireflight.. Pop: Phil Wickham, FFH, Britt Nicole.. Reply or pm me if you want to know some more.

The answer for you probably has to come from your own conviction of the Holy Spirit. Many Christians can enjoy secular music, movies, art, video games, etc. without grieving the Holy Spirit as long as it not at the edges of decency and remains a balanced part of your day. Even Christian music isn't good if it becomes an obsession. Likewise, there is plenty of "neutral" secular music out there. Just try to avoid anything offensive or something that makes you feel uncomfortable. Enjoy the rest!

Yes, it can be. But whether or not it is sinful is not the point, the point is: it's of the world. Why not listen to music that will strengthen your spirit? The world has lots to offer, but none of it will help your walk with the Lord. Is listening to this music helping you?

i would say, take your knowledge of whats sinful for yourself to do and inspect the song to see if it encourages evil or supresses it.
Is this making any sense?

No, because our knowledge is lacking and not to be trusted as a final authority on anything especially spiritual matters such as this. The Word of God is the only reliable guide as to what not to allow in our lives and what to label and avoid as sin.

I don't want you near all that trash, people talk about in their music. Instead try listening to some Christian Rap, Christian Pop, Christian Rock, ect. The seeds that secular music sows are bad. So stay near God, even in music. I don't believe it is a sin to listen to secular music, but I do believe it is unwise if you are trying to grow in a relationship with God

Has it occurred to you that poor quality 'Christian' music is just as dishonouring to God just as much as some non Christian music?

John
NZ

Poor quality? If I didn't sing a Christian song "professionally" while praising God, would that be "dishonoring" to God?

Please don't rank on Christian Rap, God introduced me to that and I know He wants me around this type of music. It has a good message. But I am a against a little bit of their lyrics. So be careful.
