  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Secular Music?

Yes, Mr. Nadroj, I have questions: Pepsi or Coke? Fiction or non-fiction? True or false? Low-fat or low-carb? Briefs or boxers? These are things we haven't debated yet.

Coke- seems more carbonated, and Pepsi's too sweet.

Fiction- imagination is much more fun than reality.

False- "Who really is it that here questions us? What really is it in us that wants 'the truth'? - We did indeed pause a long time before the question of the origin of this will - until we finally came to a complete halt before an even more fundamental question. We asked after the value of this will. Granted we want truth: why not rather untruth?" -Friedrich Nietzsche- Beyond Good and Evil

;)

Low food intake and exercise (hidden third option)- the only thing that will always work :)

Boxers- much more liberating ;)

Maybe we should make this a sort of "Ask nadroj" thread. That could be fun.

*sigh* Why do so many Christians try and pass off what they personally believe to be immoral as some absolute truth? If you don't like secular music then by all means, don't listen to it. But don't assume that just because you struggle with keeping your life on the straight and narrow if you listen to it that everyone else will have the same problem.

If secular music is bad for you, I must be going to hell, since I listen to what some people consider to be the "devil's music". In other words I listen rock, metal, stuff like that. Heck I listen to Marilyn Manson and he is the "anti-christ" ...lol.

Music is purely a form of expression, for both the artist and the listener. It is able to connect with out inner most thoughts and emotions and in some cases provide stability for us in a world where chaos is the way of life. Music is nothing more than art and art is not capable of being good or evil, it just IS!

depends... if you let the music get to you then secular music can be bad for one Spiritually, but a lot of secular music is quite good and if you feel it is bad for you and affects you Spiritually then do a prayer because the only thing that can control us is God, not what other ppl say in songs. it also depends on what kind of secular music.

So alexeeah, several people on here have made their opinions fairly clear. Care to explain why you feel the way you do about secular music?

Sure i will explain The bible says in Phillipians 4:8 (i believe) to think on things that are pure and holy. just and true. I just wandered how christiana a. and brittany s. sing songs that are pure and holy. Nine inch nails? Are they singing pure and holy music? if the word of God says to think on good stuff and all you put in is garbage don't you think that eventually you'll wander away from God? THere is plenty of christian music out there that sounds just like the secular stuff only with christian lyrics that glorify God..........

Dudette, just because a song doesn't go out of its way to directly praise God doesn't make it wrong to listen to.

I love Enya; she's my all-time favorite musician and singer. She's perhaps the most talented musician currently out there, and I'm talking 5+ instruments and an actually well-trained voice (actually, a phenominally-trained voice). Non of her songs are religious, but are quite deep in philosophy, wisdom, and meaning a lot of the time. Her music produces a calm, quiet environment, and has stirred me more than any modern Christian music in all its simplicity and repeating nature; to be honest, its boring as its the same thing over and over again. Enya isn't like that; she actually has talent.

And there are plenty of other musicians that are excellent with benign music; Billy Joel, Duran Duran, Heart, Matchbox 20, and more; from a wide variety of genres and eras. You seem to judge it all by modern pop/top 40s and "attention-getting" music. That isn't just illogical but insulting to those who actually enjoy secular music, especially those like me who perhaps enjoy it more than Christian music.

I actually enjoy some of Nine Inch Nails' music (I've liked most of the songs I've heard, anyway), and I do have to say that Industrial or Goth Rock is greatly misrepresented in Christian music. There's very few Christian bands that perform those styles. With some of the more 'controversial' artists, a lot of times the lyrics are philosophical or more than just literal (to use NIN as an example, when Trent Reznor yells 'God money' and 'Bow down before the one you serve' in that really visceral, venomous tone in the song 'Head Like A Hole', it's lashing out at capitalism, not religion, even if it is a religious metaphor). When it's like that, it depends on how you interpret what they said (although I seriously doubt you would have anything to interpret from Britney or Christina, or much of Top 40 Pop; Top 40 Rock, that's a different story, however, but still not as hard to interpret as underground Rock/Pop...except for AFI-their metaphors are really hard to decipher).

I have no problem avoiding Britney and Christina songs as I'm not into that kind of music, however you seem to think that christian artists hold a monopoly on the themes of holiness, purity, justice and truth. I have heard many secular artists sing on these themes, just because they're unsaved doesn't mean they can't appreciate, understand and sing about these things to any lesser extent than christian artists. There is as rooster pointed out, plenty of garbage coming from the christian music scene also. The big problem you see is that you don't take into account christian liberty, if you don't want to listen to secular music or

Your premise is basically along the lines that if you say something enough times, people will eventually believe it. With some people this may be true, however with a lot of independantly minded people it will not be true. For example, I have listened to the song 'Meat is Murder' (the title is pretty self-explanatory) by the Smiths dozens of times and I like the song and indeed I like the whole album, but I have yet to give up eating meat in the 8 or so years since I first heard the song. The lyrics, no matter how eloquently put, have not affected my meat-eating status at all.

Whatever you do, don't get hot under the collar about folk not agreeing with you.

Andy
