Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have found no conclusive Biblical evidence that says listening to secular music is bad. People quote scripture out the wazzoo about music, and most of it is debatable. Generally, I think it comes down to personal convictions.

If, from reading the scriptures you feel convicted that you shouldn't listen to secular music, then more power to you. Just realize that the conviction is for you and not nessisarily others. I personally don't find that the occational (or not so occational) swear word or violent lyric to bother me. However, I try to stay away from songs that are all sex sex sex. Everyone has different boundaries, I think.

Probably because that's what they've been raised to believe.
it's all about that. Youth Pastors are one of the biggest problems here. They get uncomfortable at the thought of someone in their group listening to anything that might be vaguely questionable. So they just preach against it all.

Haha.....definately.

That reminds me of a talk I had one time with John from Brandtson. He said that they played a church, and on the dashboard of the band's van, was a carton of Camels. The youth pastor confronted John and said, "You have to take those off your dashboard. Kids might get ideas from seeing that, and start smoking." John's response?

"If kids start smoking from seeing a carton of Camels in our dashboard, then YOU'RE not doing your job."

Yes.

Is listening to secular music and christian music wrong? Is there anything that's bible-based that backs up this? I listen to alot of Country Songs, and there are plenty of Country Songs that are clean. Is this wrong?

It's horribly, horribly wrong when the music in question sucks. This means one should never listen to pop music or country music.

Metal & thrash metal that is original sounding is all a person should listen to if he wants to be blessed in his choice of music. Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan, old Fear Factory are safe choices.

Oh really? Uh- oh, I think I'm in deep trouble.

What are the consequences for disobeying this dictum? Should I seek medical help? I am very old, is it too late for me? Did he ever release an original sounding metal or thrash album?

*MOD NOTE

This is to remind all members that recently the Secular Music forum adopted a rule whereby threads seeking a Bible-based discussion of secular music were not encouraged here, but in a more suitable forum such as Christian Philosophy and Ethics. Generally when threads like this are started, responses from regular members can demonstrate the fact that this issue has been looked at countless times and they do not wish to repeats past views. This forum is designed for posters to discuss their favourite bands and genres, and Bible based discussion doesn't really fit, especially when some posters here are not Christians and have no opinion on this matter.

The generally accepted opinion of regular posters here is that it is okay to listen to secular music. If it wasn't, we wouldn't have a forum set up for it :)

Thanks for reading this post :)
