Anyone here play this? I went in recently and fooled around a bit but I can't quite grasp the attraction. Is it the building of things? I can see that, as an engineer, but I feel like there has got to be something more. No?

No the it attracts weird people who take pleasure in wierd things
As for building things, its like 1/4 that but much more of it is scripting the actual object. Thats the only real attraction to the game, but most of the players dont even know it exists.
It basically just wastes you time but it fun to learn scripting with or try out new scripits.
The entire building system is so flawed that i cant see that as an attraction. You cant even import models by default, let alone raw geometry and paralax ocullusion models. I would actually have some degree of interest in it it it supported these features, not creating contect for the game its self but rather porting content made for other purposes into it.
It also need alot better support for many features such as a half way decent rendering tool and many other effects. Im not even sure that it supports normal mapping.

I read a while back that one of the original developers of Ultima Online was attempting to create a game within a game using Second Life. I never did hear how that turned out.

I dont agree with the post above!
I go on secondlife and I met alot of nice people..
The thing you can do on secondlife, is well its like playings sims I guess, you can go shopping build stuff meet people go to live musical concerts, you can go to parties...
I think people that complain dont know how to even play/use in the first place.

Go shopping? For stuff that you will receive in the real world or just in the virtual world? If just virtual, what's the pint? Why not add doing the laundry, washing the dishes and vacuuming?

some things i forgot to mention.
Second lifes servers are horrid. They are slow, crash, have error messages and a whole lot more.
It uses havok 1 physics, which is like from 1993.
It is slow to update and one update only causes other features to break
It does not support some really vital formats for models, textures and rendering.

One of my friends played this game religiously. We always called the game First Life. I also do not really see the appeal in this. It seems more like interactive cartoon adult movies. No real game to it

and sl isnt all about sex theres places where you can go to pg places where theres no sex or nudity

The real interesting part is when linden labs creates a patch applying physics to all in game objects. All the sex parlors will come crashing down from 5000ft.
Just turn enter a sky command to remove all sky and you see all these boxes way, way up there.
You are right that it isnt all islands though.
