Why not, the US government allowed white people to home stead for free all through the west and even aided in genociding the natives that lived there. Some of the western states even made it illegal for black people to make residence within their borders. It's almost like their were systemic institutions preventing black people from establishing land and money.

I was raised in the ghetto and most all of us of all colors went out and got jobs and worked for over 30 years straight and bought and own nice homes.

Seems hard work pays off for ALL COLORS.

You are applying something called survivorship bias. You haven't seemed to applied the social economic changes that have happened in the last 50 years. Plus you know 2 recessions and how some communities never recovered from either.

This is where a lack of education really shows. Some people have no idea that a larger world exists and they look at a couple of instances that are close to them personally and extrapolate. But it's understandable if Bob came out of poverty and an area where education was limited due to policies keeping the poor undereducated in topics like statistics.

We have a systemic racism and classism in this country. Two intertwined issues.

You are right, there are many people of color who have had a good experience in the US. That does not negate the very real data showing that far, far, far more people of color have not had good outcomes despite being just as motivated and "skilled" as you are.

The greater part of wisdom is to understand that YOUR limited view of the world may not show you EVERYTHING out there. This is the problem with ANECDOTAL DATA.

If you came from an impoverished area it is not a knock on you that your education was lacking in this area. It is a knock on the systemic issues in our society and inequities in educational access. You mistakenly assume that YOUR experience = THE WORLD'S experience.

Non of us are perfect. Non of us are, all through scripture it seems God picked sometimes the least perfect to do His work. I think He does that to expose His own perfection. In the article quoted this morning King had come to the end of his own power and that was the beginning of the best work done by God.

Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, one of three black Republicans in Congress, revealed Wednesday that he had been pulled over seven times over the course of one year. "The vast majority of the time, I was pulled over for nothing more than driving a new car in the wrong neighborhood or some other reason just as trivial," he said in a speech on the Senate floor.

My mom's hospice nurse is black, and lives in nice area. One night she was pulled over just outside her home, and was asked what she was doing there. She pointed to the license she gave the officer and to her home and said "I live there." Questioning continued and then she asked why she was pulled over and it was for the little light over her license being out. Her response was, "It takes 5 cop cars to do that?" as there were 5 police cars lined up behind her. She got the warning to get it fixed and a car followed her to make sure she was, in fact, going home.
5 police cars ?

She earns her money, and she owns the home with her husband, who is white. Yet, would it take 5 cars to pull over a white woman for the same thing and repeated suspicion that she does not belong there in that neighborhood? To follow her and make sure she actually went into the house?

nope.

When I had a tire blowout on the freeway, I was happy two cop cars stopped to check it out. One stayed. It was far more dangerous that a burned out license plate light.

No one, literally NO ONE thinks violent riots are a "great idea"...but once you show a community that the "social contract" doesn't extend to them, what do you think they are going to do in response?

I would agree that people not listening to (or denigrating) peaceful expressions will lead to escalation if the status quo is maintained.

However, many folks are presenting a false dichotomy as if "kneeling for the anthem" and "destroying a Target and lighting some local businesses on fire" are the only two means of addressing it.

Pretty sure there's a pretty big middle-area full of several other layers of escalation strategies that exist between those two options.

That's like saying, if the neighborhood restaurant keeps mistreating their customers, "Well, I tried writing a passive Yelp review and that didn't work...so I guess step 2 is chuck a brick through their window and spray paint the side of their building".

My feelings about "Defund the Police" have evolved if you will. From first hearing the phrase I, too, thought it meant they wanted to get rid of all police overall and I'm sure there's a small group of radical radicals who think about that, but from what I've read and the letter writing campaign I recently got involved in it really means apportioning the budget such that we have less "policing" and bring in more mental health care, social workers, deescalation mediators, etc. That we let police handle the real "violent crime" (albeit with far less "militarization" of the police) and let social workers deal with those things which don't require "force" per se.

And that's really a great idea.

The other knock-on effects of weakening the overreach of police unions to keep abusers on the force is also an added benefit. And as noted earlier, the "demilitarization" of the police will be much appreciated.

Of course! The people who voted for Trump were tired of the same-old, same-old politicians who mealy-mouthed change. So much of American drama is predicated on that! How many movies have we had in the past 3 decades about some renegade President coming into office and being a super "straight-shooter" cutting through the bs.

Only problem was the Trump voters didn't seem to have the ability to determine what that looked like and wound up getting a corrupt liar whose zeal to reimage America meant taking us straight into the arms of facism and early-onset dictatorship.
